Steering problem and I am confused.
« on: April 21, 2009 - 09:54:38 AM »
After not working on my car for over a year, I have finally started again.
To begin, I have 1971 Barracuda that I have thrown a standard K-Frame, Firm Feel stage 2 power steering box, and had my manual column rebuilt and converted to a PS column by SMS.  This was all done about 2 years ago.  I am finally assembling all the pieces.  (yes, 2 years later) :violin:
Now to my problem.   When assembling, it seems I am about 1 to 1 1/2 inches short of reaching the steering box with my column.   I have checked the length of the column from the housing to the end of the shaft and it seems in spec. It also mounts inside the car just fine.  I have made sure the column is completely seated in the brackets as well.   The K-Frame is in the car, the motor is aligned just fine, and the PS box looks just fine on it's bracket.   Are there different length couplers?   The angle is lining up as well, so nothing seems bent and I have the coupler pulled all the way out till hits the small aluminum retaining pin.  Any ideas?  :clueless: :dunno:

the inner shaft is collapsable & may be damaged & too short now to reach , you could try clamping a set of vice grips onto it & tap it down with a hammer to see if it extends

Chryco you rock!  :ylsuper:

I had tried to pull the shaft out but wasn't getting anywhere.  It was tight!  After attaching the vice grips and giving it a few taps with a hammer I was able to get it to extend.

Thank you!

Chryco - You are Da Man! I was having the same problem with the column that I rebuilt last year. it hooked up, but was about 1/2" from fully seating. I made it work, but I knew it wasn't right. I need a coupler rebuild kit anyway, so I'll just fix it "right" this time. Thanks
