BLACK RALLY GAUGES
« on: April 22, 2009 - 02:46:02 PM »
Hello everyone,

Does anyone know of any company that makes a rally dash overlay to change the wood grain to black? A friend of a friend has his painted. My paint skills are not that good.

I like the way your freind thinks.

I am working on installing this on my car.

It really is not that hard.  Tape off all the silver parts you do not want black (if you wnat to polish them like you freind di do that first), scuff the woodgrain areas with a scuff pad and spray bomb.

It never hurts to tyr it!

Good luck,

Looks pretty good but not sure I would want to do that to mine.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

The original woodgrain bezel had the rings around the gauges painted brown. Did you sand off the brown paint and polish the aluminum? That really looks good.   :2thumbs:

Thanks,

Yep, I stripped the brown paint with a red scuff pad (scotch bright pad)..it takes a while, that old paint is really on there.

I was going to polish them, but the scuff pad left a great spun aluminim finish to the surround, so I left it like that (it takes a bit of a carefull touch to make sure all the scuff marks are going in the same direction, but it looks cool, and matches the finish on my TT wheels!)  It reraly does not shoe that well in the pics thou.

I just wanted something different from the wood grain.  I hope it looks good all together.

I also removed the woodgrain from the center console.

Thanks, part vinyl part cloth (like a velour), all hot in the summer!

I wish I could take credit for it, it was that way when I bought the car many many moons ago.

I would try to find another panel  on E-bay and paint the one in worst shape and keep the best wood grain one alone....you may want to change it back someday.

I agree many things look nicer than the factory did but sometimes you just need a change...both ways look great in my opinion.

This is a little off topic, but since you all seem to have rallye gauges I was wondering what the gauge diameter is? Maybe looking into using a rallye bezel with aftermarket gauges...

thanks!  :2thumbs:
