    How do I remove my intake manifold?

    Alright, I have removed all 12 intake manifold bolts on my edelbrock aluminum intake.
    I have removed the carb, all of the throttle brackets, and the distributor
    Is ready to come out.
    I have tapped on the intake manifold- pretty much all over. It won't budge.

    Do I need to drive a pry/wedge between the intake manifold and the block galley to
    Pry this off?

    Your insight would be helpful.

    I usually lightly drive a flat bladed screw driver on the intake face side of the head right where the angle changes. There is usually enough of a seam of silicone there to get the blade in there without hurting the aluminum. Then its just a matter of prying up with a small amount of constant pressure. Once you break the seal it will come off easily. Might be a better way to do it so I will be watching this thread  :popcorn:

    not sure which engine this is. but if its a small block, i prefer not to wedge anything on a machined surface (head/intake meet). I usually stick a prybar where the bypass hose is on the front of the manifold and pry up. Doesn't take much with that much leverage on it. Of course, do it with care...

    I agree with Goody.  You don't want to damage the machined surfaces by hammering in a pry-bar.  I have used a wood dowel (broke broom handle) in the thermostat housing hole, and pry it up.  It usually doesn’t take to much force to break it free.

    I'm not sure what engine we are dealing with here, but with a big block, you can slide a pry bar down into the valley pan and lift. Yeah, the valley pan might not be happy, but you will probably replace that anyway, right?

    Thanks for the tips guys!

    It's a LA SB 72 360, I tried to pry it fre by the water inlet (steel) with no luck. I need more leverage.

    I agree with Goody. I am very reluctant to pry pr wedge anything to a mating machined surface.
    I figured a good couple of taps should at least loosen it's grip, but it is also sealed in place with silicone/foam gasket. :clueless:

    I'll keep at it and let you know.
    I plan on pulling the intake cover off, blasting and cleaning the I.M. and then coating it in silver paint.
    I won't reassemble things until I have all of the parts, gaskets and components painted. I am a sucker for detail.....

    Its really easy once you understand where to pry at. Do you have another intake? If so look at the front, see the flat surface, silicone goes there and seals to the block. You need to take a screwdriver and tap it in to the silicone--it go, once in enough lift it up or down to put some force on the intake. It should move a bit, you may need to move the driver over to the other side.

    If its really bad, try to lift it a bit and stick something in by the head surface--don't pry there, just keep it up so you can get a pry bar or larger screwdriver between the block and the intake in front.

    Helps to get mad at it, lol....just make sure all the bolts are out first!

    I just use my engine hoist to lift them off, no prying or damaging machined surfaces. Pops 'em right off!  :bigsmile:

    is the intake hooked under the valve covers , generally you have to remove at least 1 to get the intake out

    I like the engine hoist idea, the only problem is I don't have one readily available.
    I will take a stab at prying the I.M off from the front.
    I need to remove the distributor as well, labeling the wires as I go. Is the left bank of the engine considered cylinders 1-4?

    You don't need to remove the distibutor on a Mopar (big or small), that's a Chevy thing.

    I need to remove the distributor to clean and refinish it - it's pretty corroded. I am fortunate enough to have a
    NOS replacement. I had a  lot of crud buildup around it, as well as rust.
    I need to paint the block, so everything is happy and new.

    when they dont come off... I use abotu 3' of Primercord. Lay down around perimeter, and clear the area... :bigsmile:

    jk. I take one cover off, and pry up where the oval cutout is around the intake crossover.
