Just got my used 727....now what?

Looking at the rebuilt converter:

--seems to have some fluid in it..not a lot, just some.  Do they test these when they are rebuilt I guess? I would assume so....and that would explain the residual fluid...No,they do not "Run" them

-- there is no stamped circle or anything...some numbers, yes....but no circle......there IS a drain plug though......how do I line this up? The tranny guy who did the work said use the plug.  ? The drain plug goes opposite of the small hole in the flex plate(look again at the pic I posted)

-- when sliding it into the transmission, I can  get it to drop two "levels"...seems to line up right with the starter.....there is some playthough as Iwiggle it side to side (rocking motion)......took the converter back out and looked inside....stuck my fingers down into the sleeve the tranny shafts go into and there is lots of play there....is that normal?  When I rock the converter back and forth when out of the tranny I can hear it moving.....Please tell me that is normal...?!?!? Yes,that is normal for the internals of the converter to move around "out of center"

-- The trans guy said he wasn't sure which converter I needed as the catalog listed two for 72-76 318...one with thin pads and one with thick pads...he gave me the thick pad.....he aid that when I install, I should have to pull the converter up to the flexplate about 1/8"....he said that if it is really in there tight against the flex plate that I need the thin pad unit. Thoughts? He is right,I would have given you the thin pad one as it fits all of them.

Well, was planning to install either friday or saturday.....   

Looks like my weekend installcould be shot if I need the "thin" converter....I guess there is no way to know til I try it    What are the odds? 

The fluid being in the converter is interesting ......think I willcall and ask if I should add fluid into it before the install and see what he says....he may say they already did......that would explain the fluid in there.....the paint on the converter is clean, etc....hope they didnt just spray paint a used one and call it rebuilt...LOL

That is for early models only.(1970 and earlier) You can see the plastic baffle in this pic,that is what your transmission has instead of the bolt on shield.

You do NOT need to add fluid to the converter. It looks like they use the same converter company as I do (Transtar/Recon) same blue color/yellow cap.

Yeah it had a yellow cap......So, when you get yours do they have some fluid in them?

The manual is a 72 specific factory manual (CDrom) and there are a couple pictures showing the plate, it even has arrows and a descripter pointing it out......  I do have a 1/4" (or so) round hole where the plate would be....   Also, I dont know what year my tranny is...it is a van tranny, from what you told me earlier (hole in the top for timing)......(is there a way to find out the year of the tranny by the numbers on it?)

I dont know....sure seems "sloshy" to me.....like tranny fluid....but will look again...maybe it is the lube you are talking about...kind of stinks a little I think....

I will have to look again...but I am almost positive the area around the hole is flat.....the manual shows the raised section too, but it is AFTER you remove the cover/shield....in other words, they show the picture with the shield installed, then after....and the raised section is there. Of course, it also looks like the 727 they use is a BB 727......maybe thats the difference?

I guess maybe I could look into the hole and see if there is a check ball or something, yes? Would it be a issue to run it without the shield if I am supposed to have one?

I am at the shop now so I can give you some better pics.

As you can see in the first pic,there is a baffle/shield on the inside of the pump for the early model. THAT is the important one any way,the one one the outside does not really have to be on it.

The last pic is what yours should look like on the outside. (Late model style/plastic internal vent)

Ok, cool...the tranny is IN!!!!!!  Its bolted in and hanging all on its own.....I installed the trick stick dipstick, now moving to the driveshaft........

The manual says there is a "sliding bellows eal" that keeps dirt, water etc out of where the front of the shaft slides into the tranny.

I have nothing there....is this a NAPA part or a special part and does it just pop on there?  (Please say NAPA! LOL)

Or do I even need that bellows?
