I have a 318..with MP 360 heads with a 2.02 intake, headers, a 224@.050 cam, RPM intake and a race Demon 650 DP carb--and hot ignition to burn all that fuel (really seems to help a DP carb) 3.91 gears in back..a manual valve body trans (no need for that dreaded kickdown linkage) AND a low speed stall converter..

Trany guy was like unless your drag racing and have a very hot camshaft all you need is a stock converter..he did put one for a 6 cylinder in, said it help raise the stall speed a bit.

I agree, I hear ATI is the best...why not give them a call..if your up to $1,100 now, $1,400 isn't far off..maybe they have a sale on now..if anything you can get their stall speed recommendation.

My tranny is already torn down and such....

I just dropped off the 3.8 lever.

The guy said that my tranny seems to have a mix of parts as far as years, inside.....so I guess this tranny was redone before......

He also asked again what year engine it has....told him 76....He said he is going to get the stock converter for a 76 then.

ANy reason this would be an issue?  I would think they would be pretty much the same...72 to 76 for a 318, wouldnt they??

Well, picked up the tranny last night (sounds dirty! LOL)

I was a little disappointed in that they didnt clean the outside  as I though they would.  It was already pretty clean whe nI took it there but there was till dirt etc on it....I figured they would clean it when they disassembled it.....Oh well.

They also didnt return my old oil pan bolts the new pan came with new bolts...I asked abou them and he said he would check but he thinks they tossed them......uh, ok.)  or the extra gaskets I KNOW they got (one would have been in the rebuild kit, one would be in the trammy pan kit I bought and one in the shift kit.....)

Not a huge deal......dont want to rock the boat in case I need warranty work etc.

I wont know how the rebuild is till I install it....

So I taped off the fittings and such and washed it , primed and painted.....

I am planning on the install this saturday maybe.

Keep in mind the top picture is AFTER I scrubbed it.......thats not dirt, thats the arruminum.  ;)

But yeah, I thought the same thing.

I really didnt expect paint.  But i did expect it to be cleaned spotless.

The aluminum gets stained, you have to either glass bead blast it = expensive or paint it which is what I do.

I could not return a transmission to someone looking like that unless they said "do not paint it,I will paint it myself when I get it home to match my engine" or something like that .

Terry, couple questions for ya...hope you dont mind...

Looking at the rebuilt converter:

--seems to have some fluid in it..not a lot, just some.  Do they test these when they are rebuilt I guess? I would assume so....and that would explain the residual fluid...

-- there is no stamped circle or anything...some numbers, yes....but no circle......there IS a drain plug though......how do I line this up? The tranny guy who did the work said use the plug.  ???? :clueless:

-- when sliding it into the transmission, I can  get it to drop two "levels"...seems to line up right with the starter.....there is some playthough as Iwiggle it side to side (rocking motion)......took the converter back out and looked inside....stuck my fingers down into the sleeve the tranny shafts go into and there is lots of play there....is that normal?  When I rock the converter back and forth when out of the tranny I can hear it moving.....Please tell me that is normal...?!?!?

-- The trans guy said he wasn't sure which converter I needed as the catalog listed two for 72-76 318...one with thin pads and one with thick pads...he gave me the thick pad.....he aid that when I install, I should have to pull the converter up to the flexplate about 1/8"....he said that if it is really in there tight against the flex plate that I need the thin pad unit. Thoughts?

My paint job didnt turn out bad, and it gave me some quality time with the tranny...LOL

I always lay the plate on the vert so the lug holes all line up and then shoot a little contrasting paint on one of the vert lugs/flex plate so I can easily find it under the car if necessary. It don't matter which one it is.

When I painted my trans black on the outside my tranny guy laugh...said it doesn't matter how it looks on the outside, its what is inside that counts.

Was the last trans I painted.....it was for some so-so shop that lasted just 1 1/2 years..a 904 trans thou...when he seen it that when he laughed....

He was right thou...his trans you don't see anymore cause they keep on working and don't come out from the car, ha ha.
