Yup, thats what I thought. I don't think I'll be able to get at the actual bearing without messing up either the retainer or the end of the axle housing. The Marvel Mystery oil seems to have loosened the actual bearing though, seems like whatever isn't rotating is in the 3rd member, I can rotate both the axles just a little bit now. Maybe only 1/8-1/4", but they move and hit something in the diff. I still can't pound them out though.  :banghead:

How well do the inner seals work? I mean, if I filled the housing with oil would it get through? I know its not supposed to be "full" of oil, the inner seals are only meant to stop a little oil right? Or maybe I should just go buy up a few gallons of PB blaster and fill it with that? Not cheap, but if it'll work...

put a qt of penetrant in & stand the diff on end so all the oil is up against 1 seal , it would depend on the condition of the seal as to how much would get through but I cannot see the seals being very good if the rest is as bad as it is

Now that would be less of a mess than filling the whole thing wouldn't it!

And cheaper too! My engine hoist should do the trick to stand it up. I wouldn't think the seals would work all that great now either, plus, they weren't designed to be immersed anyway. I'll give it a try!

i blew up a sure grip one time and had to take a side grinder to the weld on the back of the housing and cut the cover off to get it apart. we even tried hooking the axle to a big tree and the other to a truck and framed the hell out of it still wouldn't budge. turns out a piece of the sure grip had welded itself to the end of the axle!

:eek7: :eek4:

Now THAT doesn't sound good. Especially since it seems like the 3rd member is what's keeping things from spinning. Although I doubt this thing has a sure grip, the case is marked for 2.94 gears and not for a suregrip, doesn't look like its been apart for a looooooong time. Although, it does have 11" drum backing plates, so who knows...

I'm gonna soak it for awhile and give it a try again.

no it wasn't good at all! i was at a friends shop and cut my hand to the bone on a piece of exhaust pipe. another buddy put the rearend together and didn't set the endplay on the axle bearings right too tight so the thrust block broke and all hell broke lose! my car has been thru alot!

:eek4: Yikes!

Well, I suppose if it comes to it I can cut the back off the housing and re-weld it. Is there any reason why that's a bad idea? I'm not there yet, but other than warping the housing with too much welding is there anything to worry about?

I wouldn't think that you'll be putting enough heat on the axle itself to lose the temper if you're heating the bearings.  They'd need to be orange before that should happen.

Nope, not yet. Between the intake and carb swap on the Challenger and a front disk brake swap (from drums) on my g/f's '71 Ford F100 4x4 I've had my hands full! I just spray kroil on it when I walk by it and hope when I get some time to play with it it'll come apart.
