The flu season comes and goes every year.  Every year over 30,000 people die of the flu in the United States alone.  So, why is this being treated like the black plague?

According to what I have read over the years, they (CDC) has been waitng to see when the strain from 1918 will reappear. This from what I understand was the worst pandemic in US history.  :grinyes:

Now they closed another school, even closer to us... I'm gonna camp out in my office!!!  :eek7:

No closures here yet. However, a 9 year old in my daughters class was hospitalized a couple of weeks ago with a bad case of the flu. She had been visiting Mexico over the spring break. We are very concerned even though the School officials say she is OK now and they are not allowing any students that appear sick to attend class. :-\

Influenza type A H1N1 is a virus first discovered in pigs in 1930.  Death by pneumonia is the biggest "fear", but typical symptoms are that of your basic flu (fever, aches, loss of appetite, coughing, etc...)  The spread of it is another concern.  That's about it.

There's plenty more panic inducing information out there if you're interested, but for me the above info is good enough.

I just saw the numbers and there are only 236 confirmed cases of swine flu in the ENTIRE WORLD currently. With a population of what roughly 7 billion, I would hardly call that something to be freaking out about.

the only way to put a hold on spreading diseases like this is stop travelling... It spreads all over the world because people fly all over the world.  pharma.industries will benefit big time from this panic...  I guess that`s a good thing for economy...  :2cents:

I am sure it's a classic case of misdirection - let's see what other type of crap the Gov't trys to pull because of this "epidemic." And since when does an illness that has so far affected 1/1000 of 1% of the population become an epidemic?!?!

From Websters -

Main Entry: 1ep·i·dem·ic
Pronunciation: \ˌe-pə-ˈde-mik\
Function: adjective
Etymology: French épidémique, from Middle French, from epidemie, noun, epidemic, from Late Latin epidemia, from Greek epidēmia visit, epidemic, from epidēmos visiting, epidemic, from epi- + dēmos people — more at demagogue
Date: 1603
1: affecting or tending to affect a disproportionately large number of individuals within a population, community, or region at the same time <typhoid was epidemic>
2 a: excessively prevalent b: contagious 4 <epidemic laughter>
3: of, relating to, or constituting an epidemic <the practice had reached epidemic proportions>

Seems like it might be a push by the Obamantion to get "Universal" Health Care.

Which is why people used to die from many things in the old days and why 3rd world countries have worse problems with disease in general.

:iagree: I live 30 miles from the border here in New Mexico, and my wife is head of infection control at the hospital here. How many confirmed cases do we have here in New Mexico? NONE! We have a total of TWO that are being checked by the CDC at this time that may or may not be swine flu! Last I heard El Paso had NONE! We have people crossing back and forth from Mexico every day, and it has really had no effect, and we have had NO school closures in this area whatsoever! The biggest spin to this whole thing is the news media, who are blowing it wayyyy out of proportion! The majority of the people that do contract swine flu will recover, and the fatality percentages are nothing like the media is leading people to believe. As ChallengerGary and 72Hemi have pointed out, the percentages of actual infected people is so low that if the media put it in true perspective, it would hardly be newsworthy. The highest concentration of cases is in Mexico, where the healthcare (where it exists) is so poor people there die every day of stuff that we would take care of with a visit to the doctor's office and a round of antibiotics. I can not believe what the media has done with this. 20 years ago there would not have been near the reaction that we have going on now.

I am a substitute teacher at the local highschool and my wife says I'm probably in one of the most high risk environments around. I am retired and don't have to work, and don't have to be in that situation, nor does my 17 year old son or 7 & 8 year old granddaughters. If my wife felt that the situation was anything like what the media has played it up to be I guarantee she wouldn't let me or our kids anywhere near the schools! She is on the phone daily with the CDC and NM state health department about this, and says the same thing, it has been blown way out of proportion by the media.
