the challengers were so slow compared to the cuda, so they decided to add some weight in 71 so chally`s would have a chance....  :poopoke:

Yeah, it's amazing how much two more headlights will slow a car down.   ;)

The guy I bought my 70 from in Bakersfield said that Nash Bridges a HUGE effect on the 71's! He was buying and selling Mopar musclecars as a sideline, and he told me that before Nash Bridges aired the 71's were very reasonable, but after the show was on for a while the prices shot up on them in So. Cal.

Why ? Because they wanted to make it the most sought after Cuda ever.
71 Cuda's are in fact the most expensive Chrysler product out there. PERIOD.  If you don't like them, it's because you can't own one.  :stirpot:

Owe my my my.  :nono:  :grinno:

71 Cudas are cool, love the grill, but 1970 was The year of muscle. Last of the old school chrome and hardware :stirpot:  :blah:

There's only one reason that the cudas went back to two headlamps in 72. Cost
In 72 they decided to bring cost down in every way possible on most every mopar built. On the cudas, they eliminated the very expensive  21 piece cuda grille, two of the headlamps and the associated hardware, the gills, gaskets and retainers, the expensive multi piece side markers, the expensive turn signals, the expensive tail lamps and many other items. They eliminated almost all of the options that were available in 71 as well. No more convert, no more Gran Coupe, no shaker hood and multi piece shaker setup, no rear spoiler, no louvers, no leather and on and on and on.
In 72 they had just the two headlamps, the three piece grille plus two plastic headlamp rings, cheapy one piece side markers, turn signals cast as part of the valance insert, cheap plastic turn signal bezels, cheap plastic tail lamps and on and on and on. The bonus was they shaved a little weight off to make up for the bumper impact bars.
I own several of each body style and I love them all. I'm partial to my 71's but the 70's are nice as well. I'm down to one 73, but wouldn't sell it unless someone offered big bucks.

The 70's exude "muscle", the 71's portray "elegant muscle" and the 72-74's say sporty yet economical. They are truly three different versions of my favorite body style.

I for one never said I dont like them. I will spin a little story though. If you were to place identical Barracudas in front of me, both of them 'Cuda convertibles, both with 383's and air and a 4 speed. Both with FE5 red with white guts and white tops, both with elastomeric bumpers, one with white billboards, the other with black hockey sticks since that was the only color that year, I will tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that I would choose the 70. Not because I dont like the 71. I would love to have the 71 also, I just prefer the 70 for what it is. No knocking anything, just personal preference.

I love the clean look of the 70 but like the extra detail on the 71.  Absolutely love the billboards and gills of the 71 though but can't quite bring myself to put them on my 70.  Maybe one day when I get over trying to keep it original.

Personally, I wish they had used the hockey stick stripe in 71. If they had, I can assure you that there would be one on both of my 71's right now. The billboard is too big, is hard to apply and if scratched, pretty much has to be replaced. The guy that designed the billboard did it because he was peaved that he was put on that project so he drew up the most outlandish thing that he could think of to show his disdain. I think he must have been surprised when they actually used the idea.
Don't get me wrong, I think they look cool, just not worth the hassle to me.
The hockey stick decal is the simplist, cleanest, coolest decal that was ever made.

I agree about the hockey sticks. I love the way they accentuate the rear haunch. Billboards dont do anything for me, but I love the gills.
The cost angle makes a lot of sense. Obviously the 71 lights and grill cost them more, and we were in a resession at that time if I remember my history, but...seems to me they should have just charged $50 bucks more to cover the cost, but what do I know. Some of their option prices were ridiculously low by todays standards, and I cant believe they actually made any profit off them. Some of the $15 and $25 prices on some of the options dont even cover the paperwork on the changes nowadays.

I beg to differ bud. Bought mine in '76, had my choice of just about anything you could dream of. What did I pick, well it's in the sig and I wouldn't trade it for anything not even a 71, not then and definitely not now.

I wasnt looking to create trouble!
Just asking for the logical reason there must have been to use the 4 lights, then remove them for later years. Unless someone knows for sure, driectly from the styling studio guys or the actual bean counters that made the decisions, we may never know for sure.
Oh well. I actually have more important questions that need answering, like...whats the meaning of life?, but again, I dont want to start any trouble.
