Tach Radio Turn Signal Power In and Out?
« on: May 06, 2009 - 01:47:02 AM »
I am new to posting so bare with me as I learn the in and outs. I have recently completed my '73 Plum Crazy Challenger (383(425HP))  :lol2: project (almost complete). I am working out a few kinks. The first is an electrical issue with my Tach/Radio/Turn Signals. My cluster was rebuilt by AutoInstruments and I have a RTE Solid State Limiter. Whew!!! Now the problem. The Tach was working fine as was the radio and flashers until I started road testing the Challenger. I first noticed the tach was not working but then noticed that the radio was out as well and then the blinkers. I know they are on the same power line. The fuse is fine and they will work sporratically with them going out totally if I turn the blinkers on, rt or left. Can anyone give me any ideas on where to look for problems?  Thanks  :dunno: :1zhelp:

All of your problems seem to be on the accessory side of the fuse box, so I'm guessing there is a power supply issue, probably at the steering column connector or with the ignition switch. Check for power coming out of the column on the black(12BK) wire that feeds the fuse box when the key is on.

I had thought it had to be around the fuse box but I needed that second opinion.  I have tested with the fuse box separated to expose the back of the ACC bar. I get the correct voltage sitting still but I don't know about in motion of course. Is their an issue of ignition switches having vibration issues, especially aftermarket switches? The switch was replaced during the column rebuild but I know that new switches don't always mean good switches. Thanks for the assurance that I was not chasing a deadend!!

Switches are not often a problem, wiggling the key should expose intermittent issues, I'd be more suspect of the terminals in the plug not seated properly

No I have been stuck inside finishing some business from April. I hope to get to it tonight once outside world closes down for the day. Plus it has been raining for days here in Tennessee. I had a break yesterday to drive some,  :burnout:  which allowed me to find the problem. I hope for some sunshine tomorrow.  :bananasmi

I may have found the problem. I did some connector tightening especially around the ACC main wire. I have done some road testing but I hope to do more soon. The rain continues to fall daily.   :droolingbounce:   I'm not complaining. We needed it!!!!!!
