Power steering gearbox for a 1970 E-Body anyone?
« on: May 08, 2009 - 03:36:56 AM »
My gearbox is cracked so I can't send it in for a rebuild.  I'd like to find an upgraded box that provides greater feel (I've read about it on a website).   Anyone know more about this? :feedback:I'm living on an airbase in Germany so it would need to be shipped via US mail (not UPS). This is out of the question for some commercial sites (they won't stand in line at the post office to mail it to an APO).  :(

Are you looking for a core or one that is rebuilt? I have a used one, but have never used it on a car so i don't know how good it is. It was on a 71 charger i got for parts, but should be the same as a challenger box.

I have extra's I could send out to steer and gear for a rebuild and they can firm them up, they say they are like a rack and pinion feel after.  I could send it to them for the build, have it shipped back to me, and send it out usps to you if your interested.

Wow, you guys are way generous - thanks.  I'm working with my students to find exactly where the case is cracked to firm up what my problem is.  I'll get back to you shortly - within a day or two.  Again thank you for your offers!  While we are at it, the "better feel rebuild" would cost me what do you think?

It's like 250-275 for the full rebuild and firm up... plus shipping each way.

I haven't forgot about you Silver, it's just that with the end of teh school year came the ASE testing and now I'm trying to stop a leak out the shifter lever of the A518.  Still have lot's of 'customers' looking for help from teh kids in the shop and the occassional student that thinks jumping over curbs into fields is cool and that 'no fear' means 'no cost'... :dunno:  idoits.  Anyway, I'm going to strip off the paint and drop the thing back into place and do a last check before I commit to whatever.  Might try to weld up teh crack if possible but gotta figure out how to open her up!  Talk about tight!  :pullinghair:  I've tried every tool in my shop to no avail.  :(
