buying adj rocker arms for 340
« on: May 08, 2009 - 02:57:33 PM »
I am looking to buy a set of adjustable rocker arms for a 340 build.
Isky, Hughes, Comp and Proform I found all sell them.
I will be running a Erson solid cam  dur 238/244 @ .050. and lift 510/533.
Lifters and pushrod will follow with the rocker purchase.
All are over 300 a set except for proform at around 215 bucks. I don't mind spending the xtra hard earned cash if performance and reliability are better in a certain brand and work best for our Mopars.
I was told by a friend racer to definitely have a set w/ poly locks or alike that will assist in lenghtening the time between adjustments.
So any past experience or knowledge on this would be great to help in this purchase.
Thanks very much! :)

The best ones you can get are probably the old 273 adjustables. They might not have the exact ratio of the others but being forged steel they are stronger than any of them. You'll likely remove them from a 200,000mile motor and they will show little sign of any wear.

Stay away from Profrom.

Yes, I used their carb main bodies and while if the boosters aren't set in right, a Holley HP will outperform it, no harm is done. However, if those cheap rockers crack and those needle bearings get loose, it be heading in the oil pan before you get out of the car.

I'm using the old style but made by Erson, works just fine.

Comp stainless Pro Magnum are good
I agree that the old iron 273 rockers are indestructable as well

I have a set of Crane Ductile Iron Adj, and they seem good.  Price was fair as well.

I have a cam in the same lift range a what you are planning.

All right, thanks very much guys. Sorry I didn't reply sooner, had to work late last night.
Sounds like I couldn't go wrong with some factory adj rockers. I looked around the net a while back and couldn't find any. Does anyone know where I could find some?
I could run those, which I think is cool that factory Mopar stuff still works well and holds up to the beating, and maybe later on try some aftermarket units.
I'll be using all available funds towards the 340 build and if the factory units are less expensive that would help too. So anyone know where I might find some and whats a normal price on them? Sure appriciate the advice.
Thanks very  much!

A junkyard. Any old mid to late 60's might have a 273.

I'll look some more around here in the yards. It's slim pickins on Mopar stuff here.
I tried to get info on those pro magnum comp rockers but no one answewrs the phone or email there and a couple other outfits I tried it seems just want you to order off the chart and go away.
Thats why I went w/ Erson, a very knowlegable guy anwered the phone and worked w/ me to get what I was looking for. I got some matching springs also. In a world of press 2 two get the runa round it was great. I would buy everything from them but looks like right now they only have the cam and springs for me.
I should have mentioned I'll be running 340 x heads. I know an aluminum set would probably be ideal but for now I will run these and need to get them flowing a little better. My local machine shop can take care of the block needs and freshen the heads for me but he doesen't really do much perf. work on the heads.
Who would you all trust/send a set of iron to for work that I will need?
This is great. I didn't think I would be able to get back in to a Challenger and building a 340 after I had to sell everything years back.
I was determined,sold my Harley,a car,saved and here I am. Good deal.
Thanks again for the input.

Thanks for the tip. Looks like he has some nice parts for sale.
I tried to email but his add. isn't working. I'll try a call maybe mon.
I think as long as I go with some good quality units all will be well and I can enjoy that screamin' 340.
Thanks everybody for the advice.

273's work just fine if you can find a good set or if you got some bucks, the Comp Cams Pro Magnum's. I have them and there made pretty nice, I check a few ratio's and I was coming up with 1.50.....

Sounds good, I'm going to try and find some 273's. If I can't I may try comp or Isky.
What do those pro magnum rockers sell for?
Man that 73' Barracuda looks like the same burgandy paint as my 74 Challenger and you have some great lookin' cars. Nice engine, I paint mine blue too.
Thanks for the info!
