Master Power MstrCyl woes
« on: May 08, 2009 - 03:55:42 PM »
Need to give you some background: about 2 yrs back I bought a new mc for my Hemi Cuda clone. Aftermarket valve cvrs interfered with older style mstr cyl. bought new mc (alum housing plastic res.) and smaller booster. Last year had no brakes-right to floor no vac., everyone here said ditch the power and items I would need to do that. Problem is the Master Power after market MC is only dimpled not sleeved for use as a manual MC. Any thoughts? I can by a pump (not going to do for $300+), go to manual (want to do)-that would cost me about $125 + shipping from MasterPower. Should I be
A. looking at another aftremarket co. to do this?
B.doing something else

I like the newer alum/plastic piece and don't care so much about originality
Thanks in advance
Smitty

I do not understand what you mean by dimpled & not sleeved for manual brakes

Master Power tells me that the MC they sold me is for Power only.
IT only works with a booster

That if I want to go back to Man I have to buy a differnt MC

I have included some picture

More hassles!
Just talked again with Master Power tech. The photos above are for bowties. To replace it with a Manual piece I would have to go back to a cast iron and I don't want to do that. I like the alum/plastic setup I have but they do not have it for Mopars. Now what?

well the newer Mopar alum master is a 2 bolt as well if you wanted to swap masters , , not sure what the problem is though , do you have brakes & no power assist or no brakes at all , ?
alternatives are the alum adapter to mount the newer Mopar alum master to the firewall & have manual brakes or use a Hydro boost system from a GM astro van or similar & use the power steering for boost

Problem is there are little or no brakes. New MC was bench bleed, each wheel was bleed for air. Not spongy brakes just go to teh floor and barely anything. Guy who worked on the car (valve chatter) was afraid to test drive for fear of not stopping!
both MC and boost are brand spanking new.

What part number am I looking  for if I go the new MP MC route? What else is needed, adjustable pushrod?

The hydro boost off the astro van readily available? NAPA etc or boneyard?
Looked into aftermarket and it seems like it is near $300 (funds a little scarce right now for this option if new)

What is involved with using the pwr str as boost never seen this one
Thx for your time CP

73Estroker went to the wreckers & got a hydro booster from an Astro van for $40 - 50  you need a high pressure line to tee off the pressure from the PS pump & a retun line into the PS return line there are some good pix of his system in the Hydro boost thread from last week , this is probably the best bang for the $ for stopping power out there assuming you have the power steering already .

other then that I assume you have the front calipers on the right way with the bleeder to the top & the pushrod is long enough to properly activate the brakes on the system you have ?

CP
Saw that thread I am going to take a look at lunch time
Have a few boneyards near me and I can get to them at lunchtime-what year astro vans will have them?

will check adjustment of pushrod too. Is it best too have pushrod fully extended then back off as needed

Calipers are fine

The Master Power tech was wrong. He told me that there was no adjustment on the unit I had. There is (see photo). Since I had little or no brakes I am going half way between in and out. Is this where I should be starting from? I figured adjusting all the way out would be too much, at least from half way I can adjust in or out according to braking. Just confirming, before I get out there and can't stop at all!
Thanks for the replies

I've had a similar issue with MPB.  I bought my disc brake conversion kit several years ago and when I finally got around to mocking it up, they had sent me items that appeared to come from several different kits, including the B-body interior linkage and proportioning valve lines that appeared to come from one of their Ford kits.

I looked up the proper parts on their website and then called them and the guy tried to insist that the parts they had sent were the correct ones, even though there is absolutely no way the linkage would ever fit under the dash.  He even claimed that he was the Mopar guy there.   :banghead:  The one part that was missing was the little linkage (Heim joint?) that connects the pushrod to the top of the pedal.  I'd use my old one, but it doesn't fit to their master cylinder.  Plus, the proportioning valve block is a PITA to mount and plumb.  Add that in with the giant dual-diaphragm booster and I'm thinking I'll just find a Mopar-spec power booster/MC combo and proportioning valve, probably from Pirate Jacks.
