X-Pipe help needed
« on: May 09, 2009 - 12:18:25 AM »
I'm replacing the entire exhaust on my new 'Cuda Convertible and like the idea of stock replacement via Accurate Exhaust.

My problem is that I will be running duals out of my 360ci and am sold on the X-Pipe idea.  Accurate Exhaust does not seem to offer this; as it is not, well, accurately stock...

Now I am aware of TTI's 2.5" answer to my delema.  But this small block is just  driver.  So I don't think the larger pipes are applicable.  Does anyone disagree?  :dunno:

Other than making my own, can anyone point me in the right direction for a stock 2.25" exhaust  X-Pipe?

I agree 2.25 should be fine , I would just take 4 mandrel bent 45* elbows & weld thm together

it does seem like a better way to go using 2.25" and build it yourself if you are capable of doing so.  But you will need 6 mandrel bends, 4 at 45 degrees and 2 at 90 degrees, the 2 x 90's get welded together to form the "X" with a suggested 2" hole where they meet.  The other 4 x 45's will be needed to turn the straight pipe in and out in the same direction. :2thumbs:

Here is some "work in progress" that I am doing( don't laugh at the welding, I know I'm not that good).  Being cheap I only used 2 additional mandrel 45's to add an x pipe to a 3" system.  Had to rearange and re-use some of the system.  A tight spot was the  reverse shift rod on the trans.  Cut about 3/4" out of it to tuck it up closer to the body.

If it was made to fit the '70 Barracuda vert 360 auto using Accurate Exhaust's complete system, then I would just need it sent to me.

Should I gather schematics?

Think I'd just get the 2.5" TTI X pipe system for $657 before I'd drop $750+ on a stock system and hack it up to make it NOT stock and spend more money to install the X pipe. Either way it's not gonna be like stock. :clueless:

I'd go 2.5". Its not overkill for a 360. Obviously if its completely stock you won't get all the benefits of the larger pipes, but if its not stock now, or you plan on upgrades in the future, the 2.5" exhaust will help make some extra power. And as pointed out, its not going to be stock with an x pipe anyway.

Thanks for the additional ideas!

I guess I should lay out my entire thought process.  The way I see it, if an automaker developes a car with a single exhaust (y-pipe) and we all go changing them to dual exhaust, aren't we taking away the back flow variable that the original y-pipe created?

I by no means am an expert and is why I am here to work out any flaud thinking.   :worshippy

Ayee...In one thought you just killed the whole aftermarket/performance industry... :swear:

:grinno: Truth is bigger isn't always better, what you want your car to be is what you should make it.
Personally I like the sound if duals with low restriction mufflers, there's no doubt that most vehicles will respond to modifications like duals, headers, X-pipes each making small gains.

Oh yea, I think you give the "automakers" too much credit.

You're looking at the automakers from the wrong perspective. You're thinking that'd they'd want to optimize their product to have the most efficiency/power. However, the automakers are primarily watching their bottom line and ease of construction. Dual pipes can give more power, but are lost on an engine struggling to breathe through a 2 barrel carb. They're also more expensive, and mean you need more hangers, gaskets, etc, which take more time, which means more money still. Now, if you go dual exhaust, 4 barrel and a new intake, you'll be more efficient and make more power. But you also spent more money! Now, maybe the factory "optimized" the whole package, given that a restrictive carb and intake won't need a dual exhaust. Or maybe they didn't even do that, just based it on how much it cost because they had set the price point before they built the car. Needless to say, its unlikely that the factory had the same goals in mind as you do.

:iagree:  Why does a brand new Dodge Charger 5.7 hemi car (a smaller motor than your 360) with a stock exhaust system that's almost 40 years advanced from what they used in 1970 (and larger in diameter) still go 1/2 second quicker just adding headers and cat-back exhaust? Is that because the factory always uses the most cost effective exhaust, or because they use the one most beneficial to performance?

Good stuff, good stuff...  Exactly the feedback that I was looking for.

So I shouldn't be putting so much weight into these H & X-pipes...
