Interesting problem I hope someone can help with. I recently had the engine out of my 70 Challenger for some oil leak maintenance, transmission stayed in the car, anyway I noticed a broken engine mount (lhs) & replaced it before refitting the engine. Anyway test drove the car with no dramas other than a minor exhaust leak.
Next time I took the car out for a run a problem developed. After I fuelled up I was making a slow right turn when all hell broke loose under the car sounded like a demented midget hammering on the floor & or tailshaft.
I initially thought broken axle & pulled over, after a look underneath I slowly geared up & pulled away in a straight line with no noticeable noise, what the? next bump in the road the midget was back big time, I slowly drove home with the midget going from not there at all to tearing the car apart depending on bumps & turns. By the time I got home I was thinking side gears in diff or maybe even broken flex plate or missing torque converter bolts because occasionally it sounded like the converter was trying to escape the bell housing.
Anyway pulled backing plate off diff, nothcing, checked axles , nothing , checked flex plate & bolts all ok. Next stop was transmission mount & what do you know both the bolts that hold the mount to the trans are missing!
Now this is a mystery as I hadn't had any problem for the last 3 years & as I mentioned the gearbox wasn't touched when I pulled the engine, anyhow, fitted a couple of bolts & wished I'd started my investigation there, it would have saved a lot of work, I figured that now that the trans was tied down all my problems would be gone, but alas the first bump & the midget was back, not as bad I think but still there. I'm now thinking maybe there was a spacer or something between the trans & the mount or some such as I have no idea what it looked like before.
If any one has a diagram from the shop manual that shows the mount & trans assembly they can post I can at least see if I'm missing anything. Failing that any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
