K-frame coins
« on: May 12, 2009 - 03:45:16 PM »
Why do some k-frames have a coin welded to them while others don't? Is it a 1970 only thing? I have forgotten the answer to this question. I did not find anything in the search about it. Thanks.

Good question.  I need to look at my '70 and see if it has it as well.

I had never heard of this one. What are they for, why are they there?

Thanks, Mike

My 70 R/T has a coins like the one in Onefornow's pic but I also have a K-frame off of a 70 340 Challenger that has a round coin. I too have wondered what the difference is.

On mine, the 77 matches what would be found on a buildsheet. Last two digits of the part number maybe?

The numbers stamped in the coin are the last two digits of the part number, & they do appear on the broadcast sheet.

Not all k-members have the coins though, I have seen some with the part number applied using what looks like a rubber stamp or stencil of some kind.

Thanks Barry. Was this done for a certain years or years? Was it done at one or both assembly plants? Was it only if a certain option was on the car?

Let's see what we can find out. I have them on K-frames from 1970 cars no matter what the engine size. I have not found them on any 71-74's. Has anyone found them on a 71 and newer car that you are sure has the original K-frame?

My '70 has the number 72 stamped on it. The body shop that restored my car thought they only went on AAR Cuda's but it seems like it's a 1970 thing instead.

I was just reading the topic “Its all about the details....front suspension rebuild”
the K-frame can be seen in the first photo, it looks like a 52.
