shaveing the shifter lever off a steering column?
« on: May 15, 2009 - 08:13:39 PM »
i found a tilt column out of a 74 cordoba that i'm going to put in my cuda. i gave up trying to find a floor shift cordoba so i settled on a column shift and now i have to shave off the mount for the shift lever. how do i fill the hole when i'm done? i plan on getting the column powder coated when done if that makes a difference. thanks in advance.

well the column is Die cast pot metal so I really have no clue , Pot metal is crap , it cannot be welded or filled , obviously nothing plastic can be used or it will melt being powder coated , , i would keep looking for a floor shift column out of a 75- 83 Cordoba, magnum ,Mirada etc

There is a 2 part epoxy filler that we have here called metal mend, it is similar to Devcon and sets hard like pot metal, it is workable and can be shaped easily and i am sure it will hold up to the heating procudure incured by powder coating. :2thumbs:

We had a job at work that required filling and smoothing and then powdercoating that we used JB weld on with good results, just be sure it is the high temp version of it.The powdercoater had a little bit of a tough time covering it but just had to lay it on a little thicker than usual.Use the one that is good to 500 degrees not 300.

The guy ant the Mopar Nationals demonstrating the Henrob/Dillon torch says that it can weld potmetal.  Find a guy with one of these or try a jeweler with a jeweler's torch.  I gave up on trying to find another Cordoba column for my next project. One place in Chicago found one for me but wanted $365 for it. Told them I'll pass....   My first one cost me $25.

Thanks for the link Rob. :2thumbs: that look pretty cool.  Does the E-body can fit on them ? or would it put the wheel in your lap because of the length ?

It would be easier to bondo the hole then paint it.

The column is as small as any early model GM saginaw tilt column, so the crush can will not fit as it is a larger diameter.     I have a Dakota tilt column that was given to me. It looks a little different on the turn signal side due to the big turn signal lever\wiper control combo, but it's all I can find. I will try to make it fit into my next car.
