aftermarket gauge panel mounting ideas?
« on: May 16, 2009 - 07:44:38 AM »
What I thought would be a no brainer isnt ...LOL

Wanted to get a 3-gauge panel from summit ----mechanical oil, water temp and volts -- so I know whats going on under the hood when I fire her up the first time.....well, the vent knobs are located under the ash tray where I figured I could mount it.....under the radio bezel seems too close to the top of your leg.....

I was thinking I might be able to move the vent knobsto the left and right enough to clear a space.

I know most folks here seem to like using in dash gauges, but does anyone have a 3-gauge panel installed and have pics they can share?

What about tach mounting options?

I made a bracket that mounts under the vent knobs using spacers.  Three Autometer pods were bolted to the bracket.  These are better than the Autometer 3 hole brackets as the pods can be turned so you can see the gauges properly.

I mounted the small autometer tach to a factory screw hole and put the 3 hole guage under the radio, never noticed it too close to my leg.

I need to try and find some green bulbs for the guages next.

Tom, is that the 2 1/16 size or the 2 5/8" size?

These are the 2 1/16 IIRC.  I think they were 20 bucks or something.  My wife got them for me.

Tom :burnout:

I left the factory gauges operational, except for the Amp gauge as I ran a bypass.

SO that is the electrical oil pressure gauge and not the mechanical?  COuldnt seem to find the electrical type oil pressure gauge on summit.....which is better...mechanical or electrical?  I figured mechanical, aside from having a noil line running into the interior....hooking up the electrical is probably easier....is it as accurate?

What is 'IIRC" ??

IIRC  If I recall correctly.

That is the mechanical aftermarket oil gauge and the wire is for the factory set up.

MEK, I paid about 150 for the stereo, came with the IPOD cable built in, and a remote.  I put the IPOD in the Ashtray.

Gotcha......where on the engine did you tie in for the mechanical gauge? DO they supply thecorrect fittings to screw into the block?  Got pics of that or did I miss it?

Matt,

Did you sand and paint your woodgrain? It looks great with the autometer gauges! I'm planning on getting those too, but never thought of using the factory dash. I was planning on getting the instrument cluster that XV sells, but if I could get aftermarket gauges in the old dash and save $450+ that would definitely be up my alley! Do you know if the Autometer 5" speedometer would fit in the dash? It appears that you kept the old one in? Thanks for any info!

I really don't know about the speedometer. The gages were installed when I bought the car. I don't think it was too difficult a fit. They look pretty darn close to the factory originals. Wish I could be of more help. I wouldn't have thought of doing it that way, but I think it looks pretty good!! :2thumbs:

I think Goody has the aftermarket Speedo in that spot.
