Clutch adjustment nut
« on: May 18, 2009 - 01:11:37 PM »
What kind of nut is right for a small block (340) to adjust the clutch? What is on mine is vibrating and the clutch is ending up where it engages really high. I haven't looked at the nut yet, but it is either a regular nut or one that no longer locks. I can turn the nut by hand (without a wrench). I need to fix this for the weekend. Is there any problem with me using a nylon insert locking nut of the right size? If I do that, should I put the flat side or the "acorn" side towards the large concave washer?
Thanks,
John

2 nuts will work, nylon lock nut will work also - nylon side away from washer.  The factory nut is chamfered with slots cut in it.  The chamfer locks in the washer so it will not back off.

Did it come with 2 nuts?  Never seen the nuts used on each side.

I always use the ball type also, it was standard on trucks and eliminates the isolator.

I use the balls also with the chamfered nut , you can also double nut it but I put the nuts together on 1 side to lock each other in place

Thanks guys!
Does the ball setup without the isolator cause increased vibration?

It probably does (never noticed), but your foot isn't on the clutch pedal very long anyway.

Thanks to everyone!
I am planning on getting the metal call setup from PG.
I need the car to go to a picnic Sat. so I got the 'Cuda's clutch straightened out last night.
What was happening was, the clutch nut ( which turns out was the correct factory "locking" nut) was vibrating and moving making the clutch catch higher and higher after driving for a period of time. The factory nut was not locking itself to the adjuster threads. I was able to turn it with my fingers.
What I ended up doing was, I went to the hardware store and bought a 3/8 x 24 nylon locking nut. I installed that onto the adjuster and adjusted the clutch to give me the 1" of free play at the pedal. The 'Cuda shifts nice now.
I had to use a wrench to adjust the nut. The nut should not move from the vibration anymore.
Thank you to all that replied to my post.

While test driving a 71 a833 cuda last week there was a rattle coming from down near the clutch pedal which the seller confirmed. Also, the pedal engaged very high, almost had to let it out all the way, which he said he hadnt noticed before, so maybe the nut is slipping. I'll look at that when I take possession of the car. Right now its 1500 miles away and still needs to be fully paid for and shipped.
I love this forum. A treasure trove of knowledge and experiences.
Thanks again guys.

Sorry to hijack this thrad a bit but ............. VinB - can you please post a pic of the top part of your Z-Bar as your bottom lever points way further forward than mine, which means the top lever is closer to the firewall than mine. See my post today. This may be my answer I am looking for.
