Resto-Mod Parts Swop
« on: May 18, 2009 - 05:49:16 PM »
I'm interested in starting my first Mopar Project.  The project will be a resto-mod, but I need some info from y’all.  I love both the 1970-71 Challengers and the 1970-71 Cudas.  Since the project will not be a number matching car, but an everyday streeter.  What exterior parts can be interchanged between the 70-74 Challengers and the 70-74 Cudas?

It seems that I can locate 72-74 Challengers at a better deal for a resto-project, but I prefer the 70 front grill and 70 rear taillights or 71 taillights.  If I buy a 72-74 Challenger, can the grill and taillight assembly be switched?  If so, what all is involved?

As for the Cuda, I prefer the 70 or 71 rear taillights, and the 71 front grills.  If I purchase a 72-74 Barracuda, can the front grill and rear taillights be switched the 70-71 models?
If so what all is involved?

Thanks for the input,
BigMike75

Mike,

You are looking up a steep mountain. My best advice is buy a 70-71 if you can. Making a 70-71 grill and tail panel fit a 72-74 will take much work with a torch and welder. I don't know your abilities, but this isn't for the faint of heart.

What's all different?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the fenders the same for both the 70-74 Barracudas and the 70-74 Challengers (not shared between models).  What needs to be changed for the fronts?  Core support?  Front ballast?  On the rears, new trunk rear panels welded in?  Or is there more to it, like new panels between the year models won't even match up?

For a Cuda:
To switch a later model to a '71, you'll need the rear panel and tail lights (all available as repros) some mods to the rear wiring harness and you'll probably have to switch the bumper and deck lid, depending on what you want the final product to look like and whether you want a rear wing.

On the front, you'll need a complete grille assembly (good luck), headlight buckets, may have to make changes to the front yoke, a '71 valance and insert; and the correct wiring harness.  For the fenders, you'll need the patch panels if you want the "signature" gill sets that are available through the repro suppliers.

Depending on how convincing you want it to be, the side markers on the 70-71 cudas are much different than the later years.  I don't know if the turn signal sections are available as patch panels, or if you'll be cutting whole panels to make the change.

There are other differences, but this should cover the cosmetics.

The fenders are different, mostly in the headlamp area. The 71-74 fenders actually use the same inner headlamp bucket that's welded into the fender. The 70 headlamp inner bucket is a one year only deal. Of course the side markers are the same in 70 and 71 and then the same from 72-74. It can be done, but at a high price. To install a 70 grille, you would need a 70 header panel since the lower filler is part of the header. You would need to make several alterations. Roughly the cost to convert to a 70, front and rear (not including sidemarkers) using a mixture of new and used parts would run around 2 grand while converting to a 71 (which would actually be easier) would run around 5 grand. On the 71 you would need a different front valance and the turn signals as well as the front valance insert. Don't forget, the bumpers and bumper brackets are different as well. Just use 72 style front and rear bumper brackets and bumpers.
You can find many of the conversion parts at BE&A Parts. Make sure you're sitting down when you start looking at the prices.
If Foose and Trepanier can do it, you can do it. As long as you have a well equipped shop.

the 70 Cuda grille support / header panel is unique also the 71 is unique  all other years are the same but diffferent from the 70 & 71 , basically the front fenders will swap from all year Cudas but the side lights are different as are the 71 only fender gills , the hood support will swap & the hood latch is unique to each year 70, 71,  72-74, the Front valance is different as well , 70 & 72-74 might swap but 71 is different again

with the chall the 72-74 had the headlights mounted into the fiberglass grille assy so once that is removed you loose the front fender trim , hood latch support & the headlight mounts , so you either neet to get or fabricate some headlight mounts into the fenders or simply swap the whole fender for the 70 - 71 type with the correct side lights , this allows the correct trim to be mounted to the front fenders , you will also need the grille support brace across the top of the braceto match the year you are trying to copy

with the tailights the Cuda tail panel is an easy swap on al years , but different latch mechanisms & lock assy may be nessisary , the 70-71 had the lock closer to the 1/4 panel & a longer release rod to the latch than the round tailight cars do

the Chall tailpanel May be more difficult to change as the center of the tail panel is the outer skin & is more structural than the 70-71 , , the trunk lock staying in the same place on all years but the 73-74 have the bolt in lock while the early ones have the clip in type lock

You can't put 71 headlights into a 70 fender without altering the inner headlamp bucket and of course adding the quad h/l brackets. I've done that a few times.

Hey CP...what is the difference between a 72 cuda tail panel and the 73-74 tail panels. They have two different part numbers. I know the main difference between the 72 and the 73-74 is the filler between the bumper and tail panel, but I never realized until now that the tail panels were different. AMD is making all three styles of the tail panels now thank goodness.

While the 70 and 71 cudas look a lot alike, the 71 actually shares more structural similarities with the 72-74. Take enough of them apart and it soon becomes obvious.

Its easier to just get a 70 or 71. While it may seem like the 72-74's are cheaper, they won't be once you're done with you're project! For the Challenger I'm pretty in tune with what you need since I've been gathering parts to do this since I bought my '72. I think everything needed has been covered already, but here goes.  I'm converting to a '71, so the inner fenders are pretty much the same. You'll need the headlight brackets though, they get spot welded to the inner fenders. If you have anything other than an early '72 (lucky me!) you'll also need to swap the bumper and brackets. You'll need the entire grille assembly, plus all the headlight and hood trim (or it won't match). You'll also need the latch panel and hood release lever. I'm not sure about the hood latch itself or the hood latch support structure, I've heard they're different, but the one I bought looks almost identical to the one in my car. Then you'll need to convert the side marker lights and tail lights. If you want to fully clone the car, you've only just started. The seats, instrument panel, headliner, and other interior parts are different as well.

The grille alone will set you back well over $500 for just a driver condition piece. Restored versions start around $1,500, and this is assuming you can find them.'70 stuff is relatively easy, '71 is harder as the grilles are often broken up (plastic!). The headlight trim will also cost a fortune, normally over $100 each for driver condition stuff. The upper latch panels are usually in the $100 range, hood latch release levers anywhere from $20 on up. The headlight brackets are another story. Stock pieces are difficult to find at best, they pop up once and awhile (I finally have 2 after a year!). Repro's are available from BE & A Restoration, but they're $317!

You can also get the patch panels from BE&A to convert the side markers from them, $50 a pair. Or you could buy new fenders, which would also solve the bracket problem, but thats $1k! BE&A also sells a complete side marker kit for $425, but you can get driver's condition stuff for half that. Tail panels are around $300 new from AMD, plus shipping.

So what am I getting at?

If you bought new or restored stuff, you're looking at $1k for fenders, $1.5k for a grille, at least $200 for headlight trim (probably more!) $425 for side markers, $300 for a tail panel, $100 for a latch panel...you're at $3,600 already!!! And not even half way there.

I know I already have over $1000 dollars into my conversion, and that only gets me the grille swapped over, with driver quality grille, headlight trim, latch panel, hood latch and support, and headlight buckets. I skirted the hood trim and some quality on the headlight trim though because I spent a small fortune on the '71 only wide trim, which bolts on over the top of the headlight trim and covers the lip, which is usually dented on "driver" pieces. I still haven't pursued the sidemarker stuff, and I may leave the tail panel alone because I'm not trying to clone and I actually like the '72 up tails better.

Especially now, non TA or RT '70 and '71 Challengers can be bought for around $5k or less above a '72 to '74 in similar condition. To clone a car completely over would cost at least that much, and even just doing the exterior would be close. Less hassle to just get a '70 or '71!

If I owned your 72. I would just black out the grille, recess the side markers, add a 4-speed and drive the wheels off of it.
I've always hated the 72 up ugly side markers. I always recess ours.
