Can this be true?
« on: May 20, 2009 - 11:11:21 AM »
I just saw this letter.  This is not me or anyone I know.  I can't believe that the mother company would treat anyone this way!  I have no way of checking it out, but if true I would not want to be a Dodge (or any other manufacturer) dealer.

My name is George C. Joseph. I am the sole owner of Sunshine Dodge-Isuzu, a family owned and operated business in Melbourne, Florida.

My family bought and paid for this automobile franchise 35 years ago in 1974. I am the second generation to manage this business.

We currently employ 50+ people and before the economic slowdown we employed over 70 local people. We are active in the community and the local chamber of commerce. We deal with several dozen local vendors on a day to day basis and many more during a month. All depend on our business for part of their livelihood. We are financially strong with great respect in the market place and community. We have strong local presence and stability.

I work every day the store is open, nine to ten hours a day. I know most of our customers and all our employees. Sunshine Dodge is my life.

On Thursday, May 14, 2009 I was notified that my Dodge franchise, that we purchased, will be taken away from my family on June 9, 2009 without compensation and given to another dealer at no cost to them. My new vehicle inventory consists of 125 vehicles with a financed balance of 3 million dollars. This inventory becomes impossible to sell with no factory incentives beyond June 9, 2009.

Without the Dodge franchise we can no longer sell a new Dodge as "new," nor will we be able to do any warranty service work.

Additionally, my Dodge parts inventory, (approximately $300,000.) is virtually worthless without the ability to perform warranty service.

There is no offer from Chrysler to buy back the vehicles or parts inventory.

Our facility was recently totally renovated at Chrysler's insistence, incurring a multi-million dollar debt in the form of a mortgage at Sun Trust Bank.

HOW IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA CAN THIS HAPPEN? THIS IS A PRIVATE BUSINESS NOT A GOVERNMENT ENTITY.

This is beyond imagination! My business is being stolen from me through NO FAULT OF OUR OWN. We did NOTHING wrong.

This atrocity will most likely force my family into bankruptcy. This will also cause our 50+ employees to be unemployed. How will they provide for their families? This is a total economic disaster.

HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN IN A FREE MARKET ECONOMY IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?

I beseech your help, and look forward to your reply. Thank you.

Sincerely,
George C. Joseph

That's a shame-I don't agree with that they are just casualities. How would you feel if you were in that position and someone said that's just the way it is. It a CRIME the way this is going down and I blame the goverment. Not for causing the problem but after giving away BILLIONS of tax dollars to these corperations and then they turn around and do this crap is criminal.  They knew they were going out they should have used that money to compensate the dealers that they are closing NOT giving the CEO's multi million dollars bonus and buying planes and vacations. This is just plain insanity...
GOD help you and your family.

But what costs do the dealerships cost the manufacturer?  That's what a bunch of people around me are trying to figure out.  How does a dealership cost the manufacturer anything?  This letter proves that the dealerships pay for everything - even renovating their buildings.  It makes no sense whatsoever...

So why close them down?  What does it matter to them?  If the dealerships have to buy their cars and parts upfront, then what does the manufacturer care??

It appears to be true:

http://www.floridatoday.com/article/20090520/BUSINESS/905200319/1003/rss03

I appreciate them fighting to keep their business and for the livelihood of all their employees.  I'd do the same thing.  There's no question there is going to be pain for a lot of people with all the dealerships that will be closed.  The sense of betrayal has to be overwhelming.  You gotta feel bad for all those employees who will soon be out of work.

I do have to wonder if all the allegations in the letter are true - that Chrysler is taking everything away with no compensation.  Without publication of the franchise termination letter, there's no way for the reader to assess the true facts.

The problem with too many dealers is that, with increased competition in the American marketplace, the dealerships end up competing with each other to sell Joe Mopar his new Charger or RAM truck.  Competition is good, but competition with yourself is bad - each dealer has to trim margins thinner and thinner to make a sale or find another way to lure the customer into your store.  So, you end up with manufacturers and dealers having to offer incentives to move product off the lot, which long-term is not a profitably viable solution, especially with all the other financial issues the manufacturers face.  Better to have fewer dealers in a given area to serve the population of Joe Mopars and Jill Chevy's out there.  You could have a lot of dealers in the 60's and 70's when the US auto industry owned 90% of the market.  Trying to keep all those dealers in business with less than 60% of the market doesn't work.

go ahead and shoot me for saying this, but I really don't feel sorry for dealerships, most of which treat you like crap and are arrogant. they are or were a dime a dozen, but think that potential buyers are to stupid to move on down the road. So they keep your keys after they check out your vehicle to keep you there to badger you more.

There's a write up on Allpar talking about with all the money GM has got and will get from the government it will cost $479,000 per UAW worker to keep their jobs. And yet Obama insists on these dealer cuts as part of "restructuring" to make the companies "vialble". It says volumes about where his loyalty lies. $479K per vote  :2thumbs:

I don't feel particularily sorry for the dealership either, but I do feel for the employees and their families. I am more concerned by the general "wrongness" of these actions taken by Chrysler.  That type of behaviour is indicative of big business's lack of morals.  This is a major part of what got the economy into the state it is in, and the gov't is awarding billions of taxpayer dollars to the companies who continue to screw the little guys.

For sure there are.....I wonder how many are middle management and above and work for one of the bailed out companies?

BTW, GM is sending out termination letters to more than 200 Canadian GM dealerships this morning.

I think this is just the begining for GM though, I heard when the 1,100 was announced they had a long term number of 2000 or something like that.

I think that this is just a start of what will come.  Just about the same thing went on in the late 60's and early 70's with some dealers also.  I hate that the employee's have to go through this.  It is going to make it harder to find a job for everyone.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

There is a dealer here in NY dealing withthe same sort of situation.  It just seems criminal.  What a shame.  I hope something can be done about it, yet I am doubtful it will be.   ???
