POR 15 question

I coated a few things last fall and would like to make a second coat (gosh am I behind this year!) but other than a good wipe down do I need to do anything else???  :dunno:

The paint store told me to rough up the old POR surface; that the POR needs to bite onto a surface to hold best.   If I remember right 200 grit or 400 was suggested.  Does not need to be super rough.

make sure you sand well along edges and difficult to sand places....  it will start to let go there and come right off the rest.

I think youd also be fine with one of those Red or Grey Scuff (scotchbrite) pads from the autopart store.... may be easier to get not-so-flat areas

Also, those 3M foam sanding pads work good too for the hard to reach contours.  The pads are about 1/4" thick and are soft enough to push down into those hard to reach places.

grey pads are pretty much useless,especially in this situation

Here in Finland we have green scotchbrite pads and those seem to work pretty good. You still need to press the pad against the paint pretty hard while rubbing so that it really dulls the surface.

Word of warning about por15, don't ever use it on bare metal that has not been treated with acid. Seems like the acid prepping mentioned in the instructions is really needed. I found peeling por on several places on my doors last weekend and I was pretty bummed about it. There was rust under the peeling por which was strange because there was no rust issues on the door before painting.
The surfaces were roughed with sanding paper (150 grit if I recall right) and thorougly cleaned with solvent before painting with por.

On the other hand, the por seems to hold excellent on surface rusted surfaces without any major prep so only the clean/new metal seems to be a problem.

Yeah, I've seen couple of those stories and tried to disregard them but now that I have a proof of my own, my opinions about por15 have changed atleast in some amount. It probably still is a great paint when used like it is supposed to but it really isn't suitable when trying to cut corners and substituting the acid etching with roughing up with sand paper. I have painted lots of sand blasted surfaces with it and atleast on those it has hold without problems, but time will tell.
