Non locking gas cap for 71? (Still Looking) HELP!
« on: May 24, 2009 - 06:19:05 PM »
Has anyone bought an after market gas cap for a 71 Challenger (non-locking)?
I found out the hard way my 70 has a 71 filler neck.
Apparently 71 is the only year with smaller tab openings in the neck.

I see 1 listed on ebay, but I hate to pay $30 for something I can get at local parts store for $5.

Problem is I've tried 2 different caps, and neither fit.

My filler tube has the smaller 1/4" slot.

Thx

The tabs for my 70 cuda are 1/4 inch , but the round center is a little bigger around and will not fit my 70 Challenger .

It's my understanding that 70 CA emissions cars and 71 used the same gas cap. Mine is a 1970 Challenger from CA. It has the 4 tubes coming from the gas tank to the tube in the trunk. I'm using a Gates 31723 . It's non vented Hope that helps?

Brad,

Are the tabs on the cap 1/4" wide?  I sent you a PM about this last week, It's hard to notice we have messages if you don't look at that area.  We need to have a flashing icon like other websites.

Thx

Bullit,

Thx for the help, but I wasn't able to open that link.  I have bought 2 CST caps from Autozone, 70 & 72, they don't list a part for 71.  Do you have the PN?

What is the brand and PN for the Napa info, I wasn't able to find anything on their website either.

I recognize the Stant number from my searches, Rockauto has a nice manufatures link that gives all the Stant PN's and dimensions.

Thx

Autozone 6806
NAPA 7031048  brand Balkamp

These are found under 71 Barracuda...I also looked up numbers at Rockauto which give two sets of caps for 71 Barracuda, for production April & older, shallow cam & May & newer, deep cam which are the same P/N used on non-71 models

I have one of the Locking caps from Autozone , they also have a separate P/N 5783 for 71s that may work out better as there is no handle to interfere with the flip top.

Well my Gates 31723 came in, that was $10 down the drain.  It doesn't even come close to fitting, and it's vented.

Really???  Mine fits OK and I know it's not vented because I can hear the pressure release when I remove it. The 4 lines at the tank are plugged at the moment as well as the fuel line because I have the motor out. Sorry about that but it seemed OK for me?
