Mufflers opinion What shall I do???
« on: May 26, 2009 - 09:10:07 PM »
Mt Cuda is running very well now. When I bought it the 383 had headders, 2 1/2" pipes and flowmaster 40s. The car sounds great but it is loud and On long drives it does get a bit too much. I'm really considering replacing the40s with maybe stock aftermarket or Thrush turbos. I'm thinking with the headders and 2 1/2 system even with cheap aftermarket stock mufflers it should still have somewhat is a performance sound and I will be able to hear the radio and talk to my wife while driving.

What are you guys running for a quiet performance exhaust????

If you like the flowmaster "sound" you could try the 3 chamber models- pretty sure the 40 series is a 2 chamber (louder). I have 3 chamber flowmasters in mine and it is surprisingly quiet on the freeway. Supposedly the delta flow models are even quieter with less resonance.

Full disclosure, I have headers, 3" exhaust with an X crossover and pipes all the way out the back.

I have Hooker Super Comps into an Accurate repro exhaust. Sounds good without being obnoxious (to me or others).

magna flow mufflers sound great however the magnaflow bolt on kit is a pain to put on it should be advertised as bolts, beats, cusses, bangs, torches, welds and bends on.

Hooker Super Comp's to 2 1/2" system , X-Pipe, 50's Flowmasters, out the back..
Not to loud until you jump on it.
I probably would not go back to the Flowmaster's , sound alot like a Mustang (sorry).
Maybe next time , larger Magnaflow's.....

I love my Dynomax super turbos. They arent as loud as the Flowmasters and still sound good.

I have mufflers just ahead of the axle, but it seems "stock" systems have another muffler alongside the fuel tank. Were they there to reduce sound? Since I have hooker headers and a 3" tti system I would like to tone the sound down a little.
I've always thought it was the headers that put most of the sound inside the car, and what comes out the rear is what the neighbors mostly hear, and I dont wanna wake them every time I start the car up.

Stock: it was resonators in front of the axle and mufflers along side the fuel tank.

OMG!  I was thinking the same thing....I just got my kit this week and started mocking it up yesterday.....

Overall it seems like it will fit OK, but the inlet pipes are going to need tweeked (I think) to mate with my Doug's headers....so it looks like a trip to the exhaust shop next week (ggggggrrrrrrrrrrrr)....... :banghead:

The hangers, too, are a pain....

Did you do your own or use a shop? Can you share any tipes/notes from your install?

Whats the difference between a muffler and a resonator? I thought they were the same.

Resonators are more of a straight through design but basically are a muffler...
I recently read a suggestion to add a second pair of mufflers to tone down the sound, if you are otherwise happy with the system just add a couple of 7" round out back like the factory did.

Thanks, I think I will add the 7" stock type mufflers to tone it down a bit. Only problem is I think the tank will need the shields installed too, just as a precaution I guess. I'll do some searching...I'm sure someone sells them.
