velour headliner...dying?
« on: May 26, 2009 - 10:57:22 PM »
Anyone here ever dye their stock velour headliner?

My car has the blue velour headliner and sail panels....and save for one small seam that is coming loose (but not separating) its in good shape..no holes, and doesnt seem dry rotted yet.....

I was thinking of replacing but it seems like a LOT of work....wondering if I can dye it with good resukts?

 :ylsuper:WOO HOO!

So now I know I have an SE....

Is the velour worth saving (ie dying) or tear it out and use repro vinyl?

I kind of like velour if its dark.....call me strange...LOL

The only things wrong with the headliner is:

-- some mold/mildew spots and rust marks
-- one 3 inch section of the last seam in the back is loosened up (though not apart yet)
-- its light BLUE

Do they make dye for velour?

No, no console... :stomp:

I had bought some VHT vinyl dye and sprayed a small part of the rear seat (underneath)....not great results......

I may try going to a craft or fabric store and see if they carry anything......

You could take it to a place that does headliners and have them replace it.  Had my Gran Coupe done 10+ years ago.  It was around $150.  My old one stank and was falling apart.

What does your VIN say? That would tell you if it really is an SE.

Would the second character be a "P" (Premium) if it were an SE?

I think it should be an "S" for special. Mine is JS29N0B.

If it were an SE it should have a 29 after the first two letters like
JS29   or
JH29

Mine says 23....according to the VIN decoder page at stockmopar.com, the 23 is the body style??

It goes on to say that if the second digit is "h" (at least for a 70) its a "high price class" vehicle.....mine has the H.  :ylsuper:

But really, all indications seem to point to this being an original installation......The car is an original blue on blue car.....I dont see someone replacing the headliner just to get a blue velour one....

Ask and ye shall receive!

The fabric is in good shape....no tears or dry rot far as I can tell...

Rust stains and some mold/mildew stains though...and dirty and faded ...but no tears...one seam is a little loose.

If I can dye it in place I will try it......if I have to take it down I will just replace it with vinyl.

That's not an SE headliner, SE's and Gran Coupe's had a hardboard headliner covered with a velour type cloth. Someone has replaced your cloth headliner with a velour material, probably done at some local upholstery shop sometime in the past.
