What do you think of this combo?
« on: May 28, 2009 - 09:35:43 PM »
Well the motor is finished before I need it, but I would like your opinions on horsepower and quarter mile times. Its going in a 73 Challenger ( in over my head challenger in resto section ) with a 3.91 gear, 727 with 3500 stahl converter. The engine is a 340 stroked to 416 with a forged crank, 10.5 comp, ross pistons, harland sharp 1.6 roller rockers, solid roller cam ( 280 duration, .248 .050 duration, cam lift 368,  valve lift 588, centerline in 108, ex 112 and lobe seperation is 110), eddy alum heads with a hughes stage 2 port job, m1 intake, tti coated headers, full msd ignition, carb tbd. I guess having this sitting on the stand next to the car will give me motivation to get the rest done. Thanks.

Sounds like a pretty healthy combo to me. I would suggest running an 850 DP Holley and your engine should be capable pulling at least 450+ hp.
Based on that and according to my Moroso calculator you should run low 11's depending on tyre size

Good luck   :burnout:

That engine's twin made 530 with a Holley HP950 and Air Gap. It will make 500 at least with a  big enough carb. You want a wet flow rated 870cfm at LEAST, preferably 900+cfm wet flowed. I would also lower the stall speed to 2800 or less. 3500 is a bit much... seriously it should not be able to hook without lots of tire and you'll be driving around on the convertor all the time with 3.91s and 27" or taller tires.

Thanks guys, if it makes that much power and runs mid 11s I will be happy. My builder did suggest a lower stall speed also, but recommends an 850 vacuum carb, said he worries about a bog with a dbl pumper. I plan on running 275-60-15 sticky street tires.

I pefer the way a DP carb hits , you have lots of gear & stall , I doubt you would have a bog , The Holley HP 750 or The Proform 750-850 race series would be what I would be looking at

I have to diagree here..... I had to fine tune in my custom $1100 dominator but if you drove my car you wouldnt be a beliver of the the people anymore who say you cant run a dominator on the street especially with MW porting and a 9" converter....  :lol2: no bog and no hesitations.. stick with the DP and the higher stall and the 3.91's  :working:

Street cars I run the Street Avenger 870 vacuum secondary. It will make the same power as the DP and with a lower stall will get better milage and feel much smoother. My comment was just to make sure it's big enough. An 850cfm 4150 style Holley (oldschool mechanical secondary) only flows about 765cfm wet. It's not big enough. So use something flowed wet, like the Avenger or HP series carbs to get a betetr sense of how big is enough.

Stroker, the issues with the Dominators on street cars have been pretty well worked out... but they will take a serious check to a custom shop or a serious tuner to get one done properly to run at low rpm and partial loads well. Especially on factory stroke stuff. A 4.25 stroke eats up a lot fo the Domi's issues at low speeds.
