What would U do?
« on: June 01, 2009 - 10:42:10 PM »
As most of you know, I bought a numbers matching 1970 Barracuda with a 318 auto trans and 7 ¼ rear end, a few months ago.

My plan is to make it a 440, 5 Speed, Dana rear end, fuel injected 6 pack street sleeper with steelies and dog dish hub caps. .

So what do I do with the original parts that come off the car? , like the A/C, side trim, console, motor, trans rear end, and stock gauges.

Sale them or keep them.  I know the ultimate decision is up to me but I would like you opinion.

Current ride - 1970 Barracuda 440-6 4 sp Dana 60  (4:10)

Some day after you have  "HOTRODDED" it..........some future restorer will want to put it back to orig. and then all the parts will be there.  Wouldn't it be great if all the cars we bought now had the orig. parts available from the owner.....???

If you have room, I'd keep the numbers stuff and sell the rest.  If you do a high-quality job, the car will always be worth more with the 440 than it will with the 318.  But, if someone wants the car in order to take it back to stock, it can't hurt the value of the car to have the original engine and trans and maybe the guages.  I don't know if there are numbers on the rear axle, but I'd dump that ASAP - if anyone will buy it!   :smilielol:

I agree keep the numbers matching stuff for the car.  I sent you a message as well.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

We built out 73 Chally the way my wife wanted it. But I felt an obligation to keep every piece of original equipment for the possibility a future owner may want it, in fact he will have no choice, the original engine, tranny etc. will go with the car. No the car is not for sale, but someday we won't be around but my "instructions" will be left with the car.  :roflsmiley: Keep the original parts, it's the right thing to do.  :2thumbs:

I'd say keep the original drivetrain....and I'd keep everything else unless you need to sell it for $$$

I`d get rid of the parts. If you would be hotrodding a matching#  high dollar car it might be different , but I suppose you build it because you want it like that, so that means you will be saving parts for someone else
" if " you ever decide to sell the car.  ten years from now you will probably find an old non-rotating 318 somewhere in a corner....   :2cents:

A 318 grocery-getter is not going to have much collector value in stock form so I say hot-rod away and sell the parts to help with the restoration  :ylsuper:

:iagree:  What are the odds you're going to restore a 318 Challenger with a 7.25, going from a 440 with a Dana?
Original stuff is no value in your situation.

I would rather have an original 318  or /6 car as is than a modified one. I passed on a pretty cool car a while back because they had sold the "base" car parts like the engine & flat hood just to name a couple things.  :walkaway:

I'm sure there are quite a few collectors who feel the same way you do.  But assume that after he finishes the work to modify the car it's worth, say, $35k.  Would you pay that much for a numbers 318 car if you then had to rebuild the engine and trans and do all the other work to get it back to factory original?  Or would you go find a nice unmolested original 318 car for $20k?  From the standpoint of the builder, there's little value in holding onto the original parts, especially the non-numbers parts.  :2cents:

I may be wrong, but I can't imagine any 318 car having much collector value. Collector interest, yes. Big money collector value, no. I would love to find a blue/blue or red/red 70 barracuda with a /6 or 318 just because I think they look great, but I still wouldn't pay a lot of money for one. With that being said, if you don't need the money for parts, keep them, otherwise sell them and don't look back. Good luck with your project, sounds great. :2thumbs:

I agree that a 318 car ill not have a lot of collector value for now anyway but a matching # car is only mayching once , if you have the room I would keep it
