Flip Top Gas Cap or Stock Chrome Gas Cap
« on: June 02, 2009 - 04:42:08 PM »
This was not an option for 73, but the price was right, Which looks better on my Challenger, the Stock, or the Flip Top?

Both look nice but since your car looks so stock I would lean, just barely, toward the stock gas cap.  :2cents:

Is your stock cap body color, or chrome?

It's Chrome

I'm pretty sure that's a parts counter replacement cap. The originals were body color. Many were lost or stolen and the replacement was a chrome cap so they didn't need to carry a bunch of different colors, or try to paint match one when the original was lost (left at the gas station) or stolen (during the gas crisis).

Thats interesting, is that stated somewhere, or can be confirmed?

I've got pics of unrestored '73s that have body color caps and I saw a chrome NOS replacement cap on eBay a few years ago still in the original box. But I don't know of anything in writing I could point you too.

I asked if your cap was body color or chrome, as I believe they were to be body color. Since you have a chrome cap, come on over to the flip-top side.   :naughty:

I've been debating on whether to go with a flip top for my '73 as well so I'm glad I'm not alone in the decision.

A new dilemma, do I get a primed gas cap, and paint it body color?

I think the stock looking gas cap looks good on your certain car :2thumbs:

Originals were body color. By offering a chrome replacement for lost or stolen originals, they did not have to keep 16 different ones in stock.  (16 different Challenger paint colors available in '73)

I bought my 72 sight unseen, on ebay, and in the pix it had the body color cap.
Before I received the car- it was 9 days from the sale to delivery-
I had already received my repo flip top from year one.
