oil pressure, how am i doing?
« on: June 03, 2009 - 12:05:27 PM »
I have about 50-60PSI at the highest point and 25 at the lowest (idle in gear)

how is that? im just wondering how my 360 stroker is holding up.

I have heard from several sources you want 10 psi for every 1000 rpm.   So at idle you'd need at least 10 psi and at 6000 rpm your numbers should still be good.
Just and idea:  You might review what brand oil your using to be sure your getting the best protection possible.  Years ago (and today too??) each brand of oil had a slightly different mix;  my boss then was running a 427 Ford A/Stock.  I believe he was running valvoline, and the rod bearings were scuffing.  He switched to quaker state (or the other way around) and the scuffing problem went away.
Another point to consider is does your oil pan have any baffles built in... need to keep the oil near the pick-up tube, not splashing around all over the place during hard accel and cornering.
For my 360 I'm planning to add oil baffles in the pan, and am considering a 7 quart pan, but run only 5-6 quarts in it to keep the oil away from the spinning crank.

My mechanical gauge (new summit/sun brand) shows like 40-60 psi at idle and then 80 when I get on the gas, approching the upper end of the gauge at higher revs....90/100.... (this is in a 318 if that matters)

All depends on the builder. If passages were left stock and an HV pump was used, that's low. Not fatal, but low. If the passages were modified and it's a standard pump, you're fine. I tell my customers if it's always at "x" in the same situation (like hot idle, or cruising at 3000 rpm hot) then assume everything is fine. If it lowers, there may be an issue. Not that the bearings might be the issue, but there might be something wrong. Really simplified, no change is good news.

Yeah, i guess we'll see then. Im not in the mood for bad news, and i don't drive it much so i suppose i will just run it into the ground and hope i can afford to fix it if something goes wrong. Ive been sort of bummed lately anyway so sorry for the Eore response.

 :-\

Id say the block isnt modified and the pump is high volume. Its a stroker thats had all the surfaces milled so maybe he did a little porting.

I agree with moper.  But you should be ok. Usually if the crank side clearances are on the steep side and you have close to 3 thou clearance in the bearings, this will bring the presures down. What weight oil?  Just run it and you should be fine , you have plent of lubrication going on for you to enjoy it for a long time

Im running 10w40.

Thats my plan, i need heads someday anyway b/c someone did some work around one of the exhaust ports and i have a permanant exhaust leak. so im gonna run it for another few years and rebuild it when i rip the car down again. Now i gotta get that dream garage.....
