Wheel options? Need help deciding?
« on: June 05, 2009 - 09:22:33 AM »
Hi All !
I'm getting close to needing wheels soon. I wish I could figure out photoshop to post some pictures, but I have a 70 Challenger ( sublime) made to look like a T/A with a T/A hood, spoilers front and rear and a T/A stripe with the T/A deleted. How do you guys get the prototype pictures? Is that photoshop? Can someone on here get some for me with those three styles of rims?
Here is the trans-am type wheels. Boydsdodge has them!

:iagree:  If you are going al T/A, might as well with the wheels also!

I think the member, IMINCARN, or something like that has some reall nice 17" Trans Am/Minilite rims that look out standing.  Might as well make it handle!

Then you can go with good Z rated wide rubber. Like a 245/45/17 up front OR up front even 275/40/17 with a 17x9  5.5 backspace rim with stock spindle (not dropped spindle).

Optima Type 98 Speed Bump Wheels are available in 14x6, 15x7, 15x9,and 16x8 sizes with the standard Optima polished or chrome finishes. And,of course, you can have your new Speed Bump's in any of our more than 250powder coat colors.

I scored a set of Optimas at a swap meet last year. These are 15x9's with 4 1/4 backspace. They look cool, but there's really not much for tires for them. I have no idea how i'm going to stuff them on the front of an A-body Barracuda with 245/50/15 tires.  :clueless:

Brad,

Here's a photoshop I had done when I was trying to decide on wheels as well.  Note that the VWW have straight spokes unlike the original mini-light wheels.

There's an awesome looking yellow Challenger in the product gallery section of the VWW website.  You can see more pictures of it here (the exhaust is ugly, but other then that it's sweet).

I like those ones on your Cuda! Are you going to use them?  Are you selling them? If so would they work on the back of a stock Challenger? I ask as you make it sound like they won't work for you? They seem to look the closest to minilites yet! Sort of  Expencive though! LOL

Does any one know for sure if 15x9 with a 4 1/2 back spacing will fit in a 70 Challenger with a stock 8 3/4 rear end? I sure like the look of  those Optima 98 speed bump wheels. And after thinking about it $150 a wheel isn't too bad these days for a wheel?
I wonder what they are like as far as strength goes? Anyone? :dunno:
Thanks for posting guys!

I vote Minlite cuz they are simply the chit.

Not sure about the strength or weight of the generic copies, but I think most are cast and somewhat heavy, which means they aren't hugely strong, but they won't fold up when tossed around like a drag wheel might. I know that imincarn8 has said his VWW wheels feel a bit porky, but the choice of tires makes up for the extra weight.

I'd say that 15x9 with 4.5 back space would fit just fine, but tire sidewall could get a bit close to the rear spring segment.

An option not mentioned here is going with some oval track wheels. I'm talking real racing wheels, not the weigh a ton copies offered by AR, but something from Diamond, Aero, or Bassett. I scored a set of 15x8 and 15x10 Aeros at their clearance sale for $25 and $35 each. The fronts weigh 18# and the rears are 22#. That is in aluminum wheel range from a steel wheel with tough as nail centers. Choice of colors in black, grey or chrome.

Also don't forget that real Minilites are still out there and available. I had a set quoted about 6 months ago and a pair of 15x8s and a pair of 15x10s with custom backspace came in at only $1500 shipped to my door. Only drawback is they only come in 15" diameters.

Thanks for the reply!
So If I get the rears at 15x9 with the 4.5 backspace the worst case would be that I need to use spacers to get some clearance for the leaf springs?

Ya I know about circle track wheels, I work as a tech inspector at a local track.
http://www.barriespeedway.com/  They are OK but I see them every weekend so they don't "pop" for me?

you may have to use the offset hangers & SS springs to get the 9" rim in , as HP2 said I think the wheel will be fine but the tire wil be close depending on size
 I would go with the 16 X8 "
it will have more side room & less sidewall to buldge

For reference to what Chryco was saying, these are 16x8-inch Torque Thrust D wheels, not mini lites, but you get the gist of the sizing.  16's look good, give you some handling, and some rubber if you don't want 17" or larger.

Send me  a hi res image, and I'll do it. Basically, your car is set up like the Posey car. I think the minilites are killer. Wish they were priced for those of us with a budget. I also wish they came in 17-18".
Send a hi-res pic to DZimmermann1 at Aol  dot com
