Why the Challenger or Cuda?
« on: June 09, 2009 - 08:48:53 PM »
I would guess that when most people here were young or younger something stood out about the Challenger or the Cuda that made you say to yourself "Self, I'm gonna have one of these one day". I'm not talking about the it's mopar or no car, because they are the best thing but even so you chose a e body.   I think it would me cool to hear how or why you decided that the E body was what you always wanted.

For me it was back as early as I could remember or mabey when I could comprehend what a car was. I could hear my dad coming up the street on the way home from work. Or in the morning (who left at I think around 5am) I could smell that he took the RT to work. Even before I knew what a Dodge or a big block was I knew it was blue and looked like nothing I have ever seen before. It was rumbly, nothing sounded like it (mopars have that snap to it). It was just exciting to see and hear it .  So ever since I did understand what a car was, I wanted that car. And I now I have that same car.

For me, I was at my parents services station (a Mohawk station) and in late 69 a customer drove in with his brand new 1970 Cuda, Black on Black with a white 340 hockey stripe.  Ever since then I knew I would own one.

Well for me I like the lines of the cuda the best.  Next I liked how they handled more.  Next I like the plymouth name plate better hehehehe

years ago i was driving by a used car dealership outside chicago called cy-k
he always had some cool muscle.
so what do i see?
a triple black challenger vert. shaker, go wing...
i about fell outta my car trying to see as i drove by.
wheeled around and inquired, he wanted to much at the time for my feeble pocketbook.

the barracuda bug bit me when i went to look at a plymouth reps car his widow was offering for sale. she even had the neighbor try and snipe me into paying the whopping full 350.00 she had it advertised for. i did, and after beating the drivers caliper into releasing, i drove it home.
once "actually" roadworthy it was the best driving car ive ever owned, bar none

but 7 challys, and 5 barracudas later, im still in love.

some have had more, better, more desireable, but i got what i need.

To me it just seemed as though all of Mother Mopars talents peaked with the creation of the Challenger and E-body Barracuda.

I was trying out all the "Pony" cars in 1970 and the Cuda fit my long-legged 6'4" frame better than the offerings from GM or Ford.  I liked the interior better as well, and the pistol grip was just the icing on the cake!  Bought the car and still have it.  I'm still 6'4", (but for some reason there just isn't the same amount of room between the steering wheel and my gut!)  My legs still fit though, and I still love the pistol grip.

For me it's a number of things cause I've had about every type of Mopar made and know the strengths and weaknesses of them all.

1) They look great
2) Any motor you want will fit
3) Short wheelbase compared to B body is better for traction on the street
4) I like the Interior and dash
5) EZ to work on
6) EZ to get in and out of
7) They retain their value better than most of the others

Nash Bridges got me into e-bodies. When my parents and I started looking for my first car I was looking for a 71 cuda convertible. During the search my mom was talking to one of neighbors about our search and our neighbor said they had a 72 Challenger in their backyard, being that it was similar to the cuda convertible, we decided to take a look. I fell in love with the car and for $100 it was mine. 11 1/2 years later I wouldn't trade my 72 for anything, even the yellow 71 hemi cuda convertible. But one day I will own one in addition to my 72.

For me it was going to a cruise in with my dad- I think I was about 15- lots of the usual GTO's, Mustangs and Camaros - but there was this silver and green (really...it looked good) 71 Chally. I grew up on Fords and was a Ford/Pontiac guy all my life (seriously - I've had 5 Trans Am's from a 75 formula to 2001 WS6). I love the 69-70 'Stang and 67-69 Birds (disclaimer - I still do). Even got as far as owning a 70 Mach (22 years ago....wish I had never sold it). But that Chally always stuck in my mind

Well - I played in a successful local rock band prior to marriage (if your a Charlotte guy - just ask)- and if any of you know.....Being a rocker and a husband don't really mix, after the birth of my son and the inheritance of a wonderful daughter I decided that family was more important then playing music. It was better for me to be home with the kids then out partying until 3 in the morning.

So I made a deal with the wifey- she let me get a project and I stay home. But that Chally never left me! While I couldn't find a 70 or 71, I did find a 73 and to be honest- I always liked the tailights better anyway.

So now I am working on a 73 and loving it - Family first, car second - but it really is my second passion. The kids are awsome and the wife is happy! I don't regret anything....and I got my Chally!

Right on!

For me it was when my dad's 1969 Polaris broke down and my uncle who was a Tacoma Dodge salesman, lent my dad a brand new 1970 Challenger in red with a white vt & white interior!  From the first time I layed eyes on it, I just knew I had to have one some day.  When I turned 17, I hung out with the Chevy crowd, so Camaros & Chevelles are in my blood, but I always maintained a passion for Challengers which is why I now own both a 1970 Challenger and a 1969 Camaro RS.

Growing up in the motorcity meant seeing muscle cars everywhere you went.

My dad had a '65 Newport with a 383 and a '66 Dart with the 273.

When I was 15 I learned to drive both to get my license back in 1969.

Then in 1971 my best friend who lived across the street bought a 1970 Challenger 4 spd 340.

That was it....I knew from that moment on that I was going to make my 1st car a Challenger or a Cuda.

I love em both.

And yes, they have that sound and smell that no other car can duplicate.

There was a 70 White Chall that was often parked on a road on the way to my friends place , one day it had a for sale sign in it & I jumped out of my truck with it in the middle of the street ran to the door & bought it , it was a U code 4 spd  :2thumbs:
