No, you can use parts store ones, I like the cork with weatherstrip adhesive to hold it to the Valve cover.

You'll get it, it may be something simple.  PCV working properly? Definately fix the PCV grommet.  Not sure if a crack in the vc would affect it though.

Tom

Thanks for the vc gasket info.....I dont think the seepage/crack would cause anything...I mean, the PCV grommet isnt a perfect seal, nor is the oil filler cap, and the breather is ..well....breathing.....the vc leak seems to be coming from nowhere...must be a hairline crack cause I cant see it...I canwatch the oil seep from seemeingly no where....its wild....Figured I could go inside and maybe use some high temp sealant or jb weld?  What would hold up well enough?  I could seal the outside with something instead...that way no chance of something breaking loose and floating around in the engine....but that would look like crap...LOL

block the 2 holes circled in red with wire or glue
yes I believe you are missing a link , the secondaries throttle plates should open mechcanically when the choke is open , the air valve above the seconadaries is vacuum operated & will open with air flow

I was searching for info and found a reference at the moparts board from a couple years back where everyone pretty much agreed that the 1407 is "crap".

Should I even be spending this much effort on tweaking this carb?   :clueless:

Thanks Chryco!

I will try wire first....if I just put like a j-hook or a bend in it, and then insert it, should it stay in place? I dont want to use glue (yet)since that would be pretty permanant....

Hmmmmm......if I am missing a linkage that means I have been running thecarb as a two barrel only so far.....

WOnder how it will run at WOT without the linkage....

Better yet, I wonder why the previous owner would have removed it??

Best yet, I hope I can get a new linkage easily!

For the life of me though, I cant seem to find that linkagshown on the parts diagram for the carb.....

Page 32 and 33 in this document is what I am referring to:

Chryco, and everyone, thanks for all your help!  I guess I am moving along....LOL

well do the secondaries open if the choke is held open ?if they do then you are fine
I would tweak this carb , you will learn something at least & the car will run for a while this way

They dont open at all when the engine is off....

Upon viewing all the Edelbrock online videos and looking around online, I think I am DEFINATELY missing a linkage there.....They have a kit available that looks like it MIGHT have the right one in it.....have to check. And of course Edlebrock is in CA so I have to wait another hour or two before I can call.... :stomp:

WOW......the car actually ran not bad up top when I got on it.....wonder what it will do if I am using all 4 barrels?

WHy would someone remove the secondary link though? To save fuel maybe?  Or maybe it runs like crap with it on???  Guess I will find out, eh?

I am DEFINATELY learning!  Thanks to the folks here and at abodiesonly......

I have said it before....I dont know WHAT folks did before Al Gore invented the Interweb!  LOL

Just as an update:  Called edelbrock looking to see if I can get teh linkage and I can order a kit for $11 so cool.

While I had him on the phone I thought I would throw my scenario at him.

First thing he said (more like shouted) was '750 is waaaaaaay too big for a 318'.....seems like he couldnt see past that at that point.....ran down a few tems like where is vac advance hooked, etc.......didnt seem too helpful or friendly at all......didnt seem to want to talk once he heard "750 on a 318"

Yeah, I know it is probably too big.....but its what I have.

(So maybe thats why the secondary linkage is removed??)

Is it possible that ALL of my woes are because the carb is just too large?

(Its a 318 with j heads and headers...cam not known)

Thank goodness for you folks here!

A 750 is not too big for a 318. He just wants to sell you another carb.  :grinyes:

:burnout: :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo:

Ok, its too soon to say "DONE".......but wow!

I dropped a small nail into each of the primary air bleeds. I also blew out the IMS ports.  Added a fuel pressure gauge (I am running about 6.5 or so....somewhat erratic what with the chuggy idle)  and I replaced the PCV grommet and installed a new PCV valve.

The idle is still really low...like 500 rpms......chuggy and sounds like a model T......but off the line is better (remember I am missing my secondary linkage!)......the idle still jumps up to around 1100 if I drop into neutral and rev her.....If I shift into neutral at a light she goes up from 500 to maybe 650 or so and idles fine...lumpy, but fine.

Lots of power going up hills, etc, at least at around 35-45 mph.

I actually lit up the tires when making a right turn up a slight grade (ok, a jeuvenile stunt, but she wouldnt stop spinning!  LOL)

I didnt stop too many times but it didnt feel imminent that she was going to conk out.....that very low idle freaks me a little and I would like to bring it up some....but then if/when it jumps up (after revving in neutral) she really climbs.....

This was also my first night time ride!   :scared:

Still lots of things to tweak and massage.....

Big smile on my face though!

Maybe I am just jaded because up til now it was running SO bad....
