which headers provide the best ground clearance
« on: June 13, 2009 - 11:00:23 PM »
On a small block e body which headers provide the maximum ground clearance? I would assume it would either be the TTI's, Hooker Super Comp 5115, or the Doug headers. I have a cheap set of Dynomax headers that go under the steering link and they hang way low. I had to jack up the front end to clear most things.

Dougs fit great. Just have to change to a mini starter. Hookers fit is the same but the tubes are larger and you can use the stock starter. I have both sets.

Hookers #5115, no issues at all. Fits both steerings & both starters. good ground clearance...
Most important #5 & #7 spark plugs boots fit nice with straight boots...

I have the cheapies as well on the cuda and they hit everything, but were less than $200. The $700 hooker and TTI headers are a hard pill to swallow as well when I am planning on doing a motor swap in the next year or two anyway. Maybe some stock 340 manifolds for now. I am sure the stockers flow better than my current squashed ones!!

Right now I am debating between the stock hp 340 manifolds and better headers, so the cost is going to be there regardless. I am definitely going to get rid of the headers I have now its just what am I going to spend roughly $600 on.

Are you looking for measurements?

I can get the Doug's measurements for you if you want.

I like to drive mine everywhere and it sits pretty low in the front no issues.  The roads aren't so hot here either with plenty of speedbumps. :eek4:

Measurements would be awesome. If you could give me from the bottom of the header (probably under the tubes and the flange) and also the measurement from the bottom of your pinch weld to the ground, so that way I can make a more objective comparison, and if someone could do the same with the Hooker and TTI's that would be awesome, maybe manifolds as well so I have a full picture. Also how is clearance on power steering cars with these headers?

PS clearance is good, no problems.

Tom

I'll try and get those measurements tomorrow sometime.

Thanks for the pics. I'll compare to mine tomorrow. Looks a lot better than what I am dealing with right now.

Another big thumbs up from me on the Dougs....the headers are higher than my extra deep tranny and oil pans......

I stay away from speed bumps due to those.....If I didnt have those, would have no clearance issues I dont think.

They installed relatively easy (compared to what I have heard and what I was dreading)....I had to install the mini starter before tightening up the driver side though....that will be a pain when I have to remove the starter.....just misses it clearance-wise there.

I think any of the above steering linkage designs are good,I have had my Hooker Super Comps on for 12 years withh no problems `cept the dent on the passenger side front tube from hitting the inner fender when the engine mount broke at the track.  :banghead:

What do you have now?

Tom

Cheap Dynomax headers. They are junk and have the steering link go in between header tubes.
