Just installed the HHR fan
« on: June 14, 2009 - 02:43:31 PM »
After continuous iritation from temps creeping up in my car I finally ordered a cooling fan and connector for an 06 HHR and put it on.  Tons of people on Moparts seem to run this fan so I figured I'd give it a try too.

I paid like $75 shipped from Rock Auto.  The whole deal was a little more than half of the cost ($150) of the 4000cfm rated single 16" Permacool fan it replaced.  The old fan was bolted to a $100 aluminum shroud on top of that too.

This thing moves a ton of air, and still clears the March pulley and cone by about 1/2" or so.  Before my temps would slowly creep up to 210, now they don't ever budge past my thermostat temp of 180.  I almost (currently non A/C) can't wait to drive it in 90+ degree weather to see how it does.  If this didn't work I was going to switch to a mechanical fan with a thermal clutch.  I wanted to bolt on the Lincoln MK8 fan, but there is just not enough room between the radiator and water pump pulley.

All in all, the $75 gamble was well worth it!  Rounding out my cooling system is a universal Summit aluminum radiator 19"x31" I believe, a stock 6 vane water pump, and a Stant premium 180* thermostat with a 90* MP housing.

Got any pics? I have a SPAL pusher I was going to try and cram in the airspace between the front of the radiator and the condensor.

Its going to be tight fit.  :pullinghair:

Mine is setup as a puller behind the radiator, pullers are more efficient than pushers.  I'll try and snap some pics real soon.

This looks interesting. What's the 06 HHR? Can you post a pic?

I am still waiting on the connector to arrive, so the current wiring is temporary.  Pics:

Hey that's pretty cool! No pun intended. Do you have a part # for that? You say it's for a 06 Chevy HHR? First time I have seen/heard of that. I have to buy a fan and already have the same ( similar) rad. Does it come with the shroud too? All for $75??

Yup, I paid about $75 shipped for the fan module and connector.  The shroud is part of the module.  Just look up the parts for an 06 HHR on Rock Auto, that's where I got mine.

Where did you mount the thermal switch?

Great tip! Thanks for posting! How is the wiring to install. Is it on a switch on the dash or a thermo switch? Do you need relays, etc...?

You should always use a relay when installing a high current draw accessory like this, even if you use a manual switch.  Mine uses a relay activated by a coolant temp switch installed in the intake manifold.

Yup - the electric fans pull some serious amps. You REALLY need them on a relay. Another popular fit is the Taurus or Continental MkV fan. Very high CFM and has a pretty large shroud. I put the dual fan assembly from a Mystique on my OEM 26" radiator. It fits the radiator width very well but my car ran hot with it. Ultimately went back to belt driven fan.

Electric fans are cool and safer if you can run them. If your engine is borderline high temp already chances are not good the electric fan will work for you. The CFM that the OEM fixed fan puts out is pretty hard to beat.

i have an electric fan and i love it the problem with a stock fan is it wont cool as well in heavy traffic, i have a switch so i can watch the temp and turn it on when it gets hot and shut it down on the hiway/road race track, and there is less drag on the motor too!

Well you might as well give us a tour of your entire engine bay as it looks like it may all be a work of art!  :swaying: :wow: :swaying:

Haha, thanks!  It's probably the only part of the car that could be said about it.  I've nicknamed it Bumblebee ( the old Camaro) from the Transformers Movie just because how ratty the outside looks compared to the engine bay.

I think I'm going to try this fan too. Wiring is so not my thing. Can anyone post some wiring diagrams? And part # for the relays and thermo switches? Painless has relays?
I need a sort of a "wiring for dummies" kind of thing?  :smilielol:
