Magnaflow exhaust for my Challenger
« on: June 16, 2009 - 04:36:23 AM »
Hello guys

I have just bought a complete 2.5 inch stainless dual Magnaflow system for my Hemi Challenger. It comes with all the hardware and according to the website it is an easy bolt on fit.
Has any of you installed one of these before? It is getting shipped to Australia in my friends container so i got about a month to get myself ready for the " easy bolt on fit "  :clueless:

What do you think, have i gone nuts?   :pullinghair:

I have the same system..I mocked it up yesterday using straps and such but found that the header pipes dont match up perfectly with the dougs headers I am using so some tweaking will be needed....also, the muffler and tailpipe hangers dont match up with stock so those have to be bolted or welded to the floor pan......

I am taking my system and car to an exhaust shop to install....I am bummed about this, but I know when I am over my head.....I dont want to mess up the header pipes trying to make them fit.....

Nice looking system....but not just a bolt-on, at least not for me.

I will post results of how it turns out after the shop has a go at it on monday.

Will do....judging by the mockup it will fit pretty nicely overall.....

I may need someone to talk me thru this....LOL.....looks like I will have to leave my baby overnight a couple nights at the shop (due to my schedule).......dont know if I'll make it!  LOL   :faint:

Well, wish I had better news.

I mocked it up and thought all was well......figured I might screw it up so I ended up at a meineke shop I thought knew what they were doing.

Here is "the best I can do" according to the "tech" who did it....

Well, at first I didnt care about it being so far off centered....but found out that it is hitting the floorbaords and stuff because of being installed wrong.

I got in touch with Magnaflow and they sent pics of what it SHOULD look like....and, well, it should be centered and much tighter to the undercarriage.

Magnaflows instruction sheet IS misleading and I argued that...but they said the kit inlet pipes are "universal" meaning the tech installing the kit has to know what he is doing.

Obviously, the one doing mine didnt, or didnt care.

Either way, I now have to buy two new inlet pipes, two new reducers/gaskets and have another shop redo it.

I am pretty ticked off.

That said, the exhaust sounds good...mellow till you get on it.....

Will be happy once I get the new pipes (1-2 weeks) and get it to the other shop.

In the meantime the first shop manager claims he will send me a check for the parts needed to be replaced....but not sure that he is going to refund what they charged me to install it.......

The second shop is also a meineke but when I showed the guys the pictures they indicated it was definately a bad job.....

Wow that is a bad job i would be ticked to.I decided to not buy the kit i am going to get the mufflers and we have a friend who mandrel bends up to 3 inch he did the exhaust on our cars for years he charges $250 and that includes pipes never had a issue with him.If you can find a muffler shop that is custom or does street rods they really will do a better job for you. These regular shops are used to newer cars which are bolt and go.

I hear ya on that.

Initially my issue was getting the car somewhere with open pipes....

Now that the exhaust is on (even though poorly) I can drive somewhere else....not many shops around here that specialize in customs/rods though......

Hi shadango
Thanks for the picks, that's a bummer about the fit. It looks to me they mixed up the inlet pipes. Not realising mopars have offset drivetrains they used the right side inlet on the left. I wonder if you just unbolt the center section and turn it upside down would fix your problem.
I will not make that mistake on mine.  :banghead:
Show us the final result

The center section cant be flipped as the end of it is angled a certain way (down I think) to match the pipes.....

I already have the new inlet pipes and the new reducers are on their way...

Just have to get my refund and reimbursement for the new parts from the first guy and make the appt with the second guy.....

I will post pics etc when this gets done.........

That all said, I am liking how the exhaust sounds when you tromp on it......I am still having issues with my carb/timing.idle, but when I wind it out it sounds neat.

i love the magnaflow system, and with tti headers,i put a 3" on mine and when you get in to it,,its close to an orgasum,, :woohoo:,,i installed mine myself and got it alittle low,,but out here in the place i live, there has been a shop, one guy thats been doing it for 30yrs,,he took what i did and was able to install it perfectly,,i did have to buy reducers and being short on funds i let him cut about 10" off each side and replace it with regular 3" pipe,,but i was only out $85 for the whole job,,i do all work myself ,,but someone that has done exhaust work for a living is the only way to go,,theres alot of little tricks and they know them,,i would recomend the magnaflow and tti headers to anybody,,but let a pro do the installation,,will save you a  :scared:
