starting troubles, please help
« on: June 16, 2009 - 11:41:22 AM »
Ok folks, wierd one. She started just fine this morning, i drove about 8 min to the education center, took my CLEP test, came back out and she wouldnt fire up again. it did this last night too when i went to my softball game, ran just fine from the house to the ball field, played our game, and she wouldnt start. The battery ended up dieing from cranking so much last night but then my buddy came with jumper cables, 3 more attempts and it finally fired and worked fine all the way home. it did this last weekend too and i thought i just flooded it somehow. any advice?   :feedback:

Sounds like a carb issue to me.... have you messed with the carb at all.... maybe it fires up in the morning from the fuel being dried out on the plugs then you drive it around turn it off and do whatever and gas is puddling out of the carb from the bowl and soaking the plugs and it wont fire.....  I bet when you trying to start the car also you keep pumping the pedal..... if that happens again hold the pedal to the floor without pumping and try starting it .......

Change the oil and get all of that gas out of there......  :working:

Need some symptoms , did you check for spark ? or did you confirm that it is flooding , was the carb still squirting fuel , it could be carb or ign related

same carb i was running before i swapped intakes. it is still squirting fuel. i havent check for spark when cranking, i need to but it always happens when i dont have time or tools. i have tried both pumping and tried just flooring it and it just turns slower when i keep it floored. turns faster when i give it no gas. i have tried starting it with no gas at all and with just a little pedal, and it still does it. the carb is a 650 eddelbrock.

Is this the same carb you were having issues with when I met you? It sounds like too much gas , or not enough spark.  With the key in the "on" position, how many volts do you read on the "+" side of the coil?

no backfiring, just not starting. it happened again last night and left us stranded at outback. it cranks and cranks and cranks, but no starting. i havent been pushing the gas at all when i get in and try to start it. we checked if it was getting fuel, but couldnt check for spark. i am wondering if some of my wiring is bad?

I think if you mean the car chugs when you turn the key off you are dumping excess fuel into the system and the car tries to keep running..... its carb related and you need to start all over setting the idle screw and re checking timing and of course shange the plugs out....

as far as the cranking can you feel the starter engaging.....
