Need carpet install advice
« on: June 16, 2009 - 11:58:47 PM »
My wife went and bought me some new carpet for the fish without me knowing.   :2thumbs: It came yesterday.....I have it out of the box "breathing".LOL

Can someone give me a bit of advice on cutting out the holes for the floor shifter gear in new carpet?

Do you have to remove the gear or can you just cut slits and expand them etc?

I woudl remove the sifter , get the carpet positioned as far forwrd as possible , it should go behind the heater box a little , trim around the Gas pedal & column & work you way back & trim very carefully around the shifter , I assume it is auto so the left side needs to be left extra long to hide behind the console , it is easy to trim off too much

i made the mistake of not getting the carpet behind the heater box and cutting the carpet up front. then when i got it in and had all my holes cut, i realized that the carpet was too far back still by about an inch. so now i have to get a new front carpet. remember, measure twice cut once, even measure 8 times. good luck and  :useless:

How do you know how far up it has to go, or is it kind of apparent once it is in place?

the carpet should be formed and you will be able to tell the way that it fits the trans tunnel

Are carpets different for 4-speeds and Automatics?

Do carpets come with the white plastic seat belt mechanism covers and the metal grommets in the rear corners?

I'm going to be ordering soon -  who makes the best fitting carpets?

4 spd & auto are different , it is sort of obvious but it is difficult to get it to sit far enough forward , when cutting around the  shifter cut to the right side & leave lots on the left side

i got my carpet from ebay and it is awesome, right color and would have fit fine if i would have measured first and slid it up behind the heater box. oh well, lessons learned. I will post the company name later when i get home.

I have mine about 80% in....I *think* I cut it right so far.....looking good.....I guess the console and the seats keep it in place.....still have to cut around the gas pedal and dimmer switch and foot washer pump.....but have the console pretty much cut in..I left lots of  extra under the console....man I was nervous making that first cut!  LOL

Its amazing though what freshcarpet does for a project!   :2thumbs:

This is a little late since you have already cut BUTTTT I laid the old carpet on top of the new stuff and used it as a pattern!  the carpet fit like a glove with NO mistakes!  I figured using the old one as a pattern would eliminate errors and it did!
