Hot Car Won't Turn Over
« on: June 18, 2009 - 12:31:56 PM »
My 360ci 4bbl auto does not turn over after it's been run.  I get nothing:'( After waiting awhile, it struggles to turn over and then fires.  The car starts up when it is cold after a few pumps and holding it to the floor before I turn the key (I personally don't like this either).  It has the regular fuel pump and ignition system. I did install a new mini-starter, plugs and wires in September.

This summer is my first chance to drive her to hot temperatures since we purchased it in August.  So I haven't gone through much... Any suggestions?

I doubt the relay is the problem but check to be sure it is activating , I suspect the new mini starter is the issue

Sounds like the solenoid is shot. Sometimes these are just bad from the factory, I replaced my stock starter (for the same exact reason) with a rebuilt one from Kragen and had it die within a week. They replaced it, but its not uncommon with the new electrical stuff. On a slightly different note, I went through about half a dozen condensers on my Austin Healey before getting one that worked. Manufacturing standards in China aren't all that great, and if there's a flaw the insulation breaks down under heat and causes the non-starting issue. Once cooled it works again, but as you know only until it gets hot.

I believe you can just get a solenoid for the mini-starters, that way you wouldn't have to replace the whole thing.

the end plate si easily removed to access the solinoid contacts , cleaning then or aligning them may fix the problem

If you have headers, it's possible you are overheating the starter as the tubes are real close by. It may need a heat shield.   :dunno:

I don't have headers but I was going to add a heat shield anyhow down the road.

You beat me to it.  Mine cranks slower (but cranks and starts) if I do a quick re-start.

I have also found that with too much timing they will start great when cold, but lag terribly when hot.  Just another idea....    :2cents:

The only Heat Shield that I've found is from Thermo Tec.  Any others?

I tend to think if most cars work with out a heat sheild then it wont help .
not to  say never but on custom fit issues a heat sheild may be needed but its a mask not a fix . look at whats in front of you the failed part is looking back .
as another said look at the timing and relay even the battery can be the cause if older or sits for long periods un used .

I had the exact same thing happen, and it was the starter. Replaced it, and the problem went away.

Has your racing buddies application been on stock cars as opposed to race cars?
