What size wheel with disc brakes on a 70
« on: June 18, 2009 - 02:11:15 PM »
What was the factory wheel size for a 1970 Challenger with power disc brakes?  Was it 14" or 15"?

15".  14" won't fit over the calipers.

I've never heard of any restrictions on wheels if you ordered power disc brakes in 1970.
FWIW my '70 convertible has factory disc brakes and 14" magnum 500 wheels.
I don't have the broadcast sheet to verify those were the original wheels, however I can tell you there is no problem with these wheels and my factory disc brakes.
My cars assembly line mate, which still has its broadcast sheet, also has power disc brakes and it was built with 14" steel wheels and wheel covers.

And I thought about it for a moment before I hit "Post" too.

I guess the original factory pieces use smaller rotors than the MPB retrofit kit I installed on mine.  It required 15" wheels to fit over the caliper.  I thought it was equivalent to stock, but I guess it isn't.

Was it 14" or 15"?

Yes.

That is the simple answer, since no other wheel sizes were available.  ;)

If you do not know for sure what it came with, check & see if;

1. The original door jamb tire sticker is present.

2. What position is your spare tire stud in the trunk, forward or back?

3. Is there any evidence of red paint on your rear drums?

4. What is the axle ratio & speedometeer gear color / number?

With that data you can make a fairly educated guess it the car has not been messed with.

Of course, if you have a broadcast sheet for it, then it eliminates the guesswork.

the 11.8" cordoba rotors fit inside the 15" wheels so the 10.7 " discs should fit the 14"

Thanks for the help.  My car came with power disc brakes and wire wheel covers.  The last owner put a set of Cragar S/S's on it and I really like the look of Magnum 500's.  I have a set of 14" Magnums I think I'll redo and put on the car.  I just didn't know if the 14" wheels would work, but after researching it looks like they will work.
