I am Done With 440 Source!!!
« on: June 18, 2009 - 08:13:42 PM »
I just got one of several emails from 440 Source. I have been fighting them on a new Mopar big block fab aluminum deep sump oil pan I bought from them. The pan cost me $150.00 smackers. It looked good and had some nice features like a place for a dipstick. It fit well and I had no problems until I filled the pan and ran the engine on the dyno. It leaked at the weld seam for the billet rail. The bolt holes are spot faced for the bolt heads. They cut too much into the weld and exposed the seam where the billet rail is welded to the pan face. It was just a hairline seam and wasn't apparent until hot oil was splashing in the pan. I called 440 Source and they said mail it back. I had drilled a hole in the pan for an external pickup (1st problem) and it was purchased more than 45 days ago (2nd problem). Due to these two problems, 440 Source refused to do anything. I was furious :swear:because they sold me a defective oil pan and are now going to leave me holding the bag. I couldn't seem to get it thru to them about implied warranty. A consumer can reasonably expect to purchase a working functional product. They kept bringing up the expired warranty and the fact that I drilled a hole in the pan. The hole in the pan has nothing to do with the defect!! :pullinghair:I just can't understand people today. If I was the owner and sold a piece of crap defective oil pan to a customer that has spent THOUSANDS in my shop, I'd eat it and replace the pan to make hime whole and keep a good customer. There's no sense of right or wrong anymore. It's about legality, I kept it longer than the warranty period sitting in a garage while my STEALTH heads were being machined!! I drilled a hole in it for an oil pump I bought from 440 Source. they sell me a defective piece of crap and wash their hands of it!! I am done with 440 Source!! :villagers: I hope Moparal gets up and running soon!! He'll be No. 1 in my speed dial!! :2thumbs:

Thanks for the offer. I've already been set back two weeks on the motor install because of the pan. I just ordered a Milodon pan to replace it. If you were closer, I'd take you up on it. I'll have my buddy here see if he can tig it!! :2thumbs:
Am I just  a cry baby here?? How would you folks feel in my situation?? I know I lapsed on the warranty, but come on, is this the way to do business with a good longstanding customer?? Maybe I'm just too old school?? :dunno:

id be up their azz bad. if the product you purchased did not perform in the advertised and represented manner, they are at fault. did your modification alter the structural integrity of the part?
if not, the defect is not your liability. time seldom agrees with restorers, and builders. parts sit for untold time while other facets come into fruition . i have never encountered resistance due to that factor thank goodness. all the vendors i deal with know full and well how the real world works.
no crying, just fact, they sold you junk. and the warranty gimmick sounds like an excuse, and excuses are for folks that cant answer with fact.

if your pal cant help you, i will.
just keep it in mind, and i hope things work out for you.

They should at least pay to have it welded.

Exactly, they should fix the leak and send it back to you. That is the LEAST that they could do.

That's what I said, and really all I wanted.....to be made whole!! They said they would "look into" having it weld repaired, but it would have to be during the next production run and because of the large volume that they produce it may be a 6 to 12 month wait. WOW, what an olive leaf!! Such a gracious offer. The final nail in the coffin was when they asked me for a credit card number to mail my oil pan back. I already paid $16 bucks to get it there. They couldn't even pay to ship it back to me. I'm over it!! :swear: :stomp: :swear:

Not wanting to bash anyone but I just installed a 440 source water pump. When I went to put on the thermostat I found it wasn't machined for one? Then when I went to put on my power steering pump I discovered the bosses were .300" longer than my old cast iron pump housing? With that I thought maybe seeing my 440 is from a motor-home maybe they are different?. I'm lucky as I have a Bridgeport mill in my garage so I can take it off and machine it so it is right? I though OK maybe they leave material on the bosses for different applications, but that excuse won't fly for the thermostat!  I was looking at their heads but with "quality issues" like that I'd have to think twice? I know the old saying "you get what you pay for" and I have read that their stuff is made in China ,but I needed a pump housing that exited on the drivers side because I'm using a universal aluminum rad. I never phoned/emailed them on this because I'm in Canada and the hassles/costs of shipping it back are not worth it to me. Makes me think twice about using their stuff though? I did see quite a few items on their web site that looked interesting to me?

Some people have zero business sense. A successful business is one that helps and supports their customer base, not alienate them. Word of mouth is the most effective advertising tool there is. I have never done biz with 440 Source, but just based on this post alone I never would.

$150 is dirt cheap for an aluminum fabbed oil pan. That's cheaper than the stamped steel stocker type. Even if you have to fix a leak it's a bargain. :grinyes: Don't know how mad I'd get if I modified the pan somehow and it was out of warrantee, but that's your call.  :2cents:

Mybey a "bargin", but a very defective one. You shouldn't have to pay for, or make your own repairs on new parts. Now if he had bought this at a swap meet it would be an entirely different story on the defect. When these vendors get popular they too often become indifferent and independant, looking for ways to get out of making things right. I'd be p!ssed too big time. Sorry about this Mopar bud, but I'd definately let the Mopar crowd know of at least their attitude about making things right. Getting a bad part can happen, not willing to make it right is indeed BS.  :2cents:

In todays business world, customer satisfaction should be pretty high.  It's not like 20-30 years ago.  They ought to make it right if they want to stay in  business.  :2cents:

Reminds me when I bought a set of headers for an old Integra I had.  The collector was hitting the steering rack.  The company that sold it to me said the headers ad to be heated and bent to fit.  I thought, WTF, this is a new part?  The guy said even the $500 set of headers on his car had to be heated and bent.  After no satisfaction from the vendor, I called the manufacturer.  Turns out they mispackaged Civic headers with the Integra headers....  :bricks1:  BTW, that vendor no longer exists...

Hope your situation gets squared away!
