How do you remove steering coupler?
« on: June 21, 2009 - 10:59:47 PM »
OK I'm stumped. I'm switching steering columns . Column shift to Floor shift. How do you remove the coupler? I have a new kit but still can't figure it out? Power steering column if that matters?

Should be a pin down near the bottom to punch out & then work the coupler up, sometimes easier said than done!  :2thumbs: Rich.

Did this a couple of weeks ago.  Just use a little penetrating lube and knock out the roll pin...I think I used a 1/4 punch and about 3 wacks with 2 1/2 lbs.

Sometimes the roll pin can be tough to remove. All of the hammering doesn't do the steering box bearings any good either.

Another option is to remove the small pin and the retainer then pull the steering column back. The coupler guts will come out leaving the coupler in place. Having a helper in the car to reinstall the parts makes it easier. :2cents:

a tie rod pickle fork will pry up the coupler after the roll pin is removed

I mean how to you remove the coupler from the column? I have it off the steering box.
If that's what you mean about the split pin?

yeah there is a tiny pin near the top of the coupler , I use a wrench & just pry it back rolling the end of an open end wrench in the end of the coupler

make Sure you mark thew orientation of the coupler on thew shaft , if you put it on 180* out the steering wheel will be upside down

Good point.    This is something I forgot to do.  YIKES!!   I guess I will find out when it goes back in.   Can this not be corrected by disconnecting the coupling from the steering box and rotating it?

Thanks ... CHAPS70RT

no , there is only 1 master spline , the coupler only goes on one way , some steering shafts have a small hole drilled into them , thhis is on the same side as the small retainer pin near the top of the coupler

Thanks CP ....... I will check mine before re-installing.   Just got my column rebuilt and am about to reinstall in place.  Had a heck of a time getting my coupling pin off of the shaft (polished piece that goes inside the coupler).   The coupling kit came with a replacement, so I figured I should punch it out and install new.   It was extremely stubborn, then the new one simply pushed straight through?

Congrats Brad
the solid pin can be a tough one to get out , I rarely replace it unless the shoes are loose on the cross pin
