HELP! I have found RUST
«

After removing dash and stripping off undercoating on Wheelwell side of firewall this is what i found( see attached pictures 1st is outside 2nd is inside). Is there anymore gut wrenching feeling than finding rot. Any ideas on where to go from here? A friend says to media blast out all remnants of rust and rot then apply a layer of fiberglass matting under coat the outside paint the inside and move on. I would like to cut out and MIG in new metal but do not know of a source for new shhet metal patch piece. Anyone got any ideas it would be greatly appreciated. THANKS

It looks there's entire firewall and cowl assemblies available. You probably should check the cowl area for rust holes and thin spots too.
I agree that finding something wrong makes a good situation go quickly pear shaped, but you have to step back and find a different way to attack it.

I had the same rust problem with my '70 Cuda. I had to remove the welds where the brace attached and cut out the rust behind it. If that is the only major area of repair area on the cowl area I would just fabricate a piece of metal rather than replace it with an aftermarket cowl. Much cheaper and probably faster. You really don't see that area once the car is assembled anyway.

Better inspect the entire firewall real careful. The way the factory shaped the upper portion of the firewall at the weld seam is just asking for corrosion. There is a nice trough for dirt to lay in.

yes, look it over good. I elected to replace my firewall as there was so much rust and holes, I felt like it would be patchwork quilt. Still it probably could have been done.

That is quite a bit of swiss cheese on the drive fire wall. There is a good chance that the iside of the fire wall (under the dash) is rusted even worse. I hope you don't find this problem, but there is a good chance.
I can hook you up with an aftermarket firewall and will send you pricing, just in case you need it.
