70 challenger
« on: June 23, 2009 - 03:02:01 AM »
My step brother has been telling me for quite some time now about an old mopar that sits down the road from him. Being a ford guy he could never really tell me what is was for sure. Well I see him at the parents for fathers day and he has pictures! Ever better he talked to the guy and he wants to sell the car!!!! I start looking at the pictures and its a 70 challenger and looks to be in real good shape. Its white with black interior and a black vinal top. He says it been sitting for 2-3 years. Said he only seen a few bubbles on the rear quarters and interior is almost perfect, buckets and console. I start looking at the pics better and someone had painted the engine bay black but the paints peeling and its orange under it. He says the guy told him it was originally an orange car! Next thing I notice is it has what looks like a original flip up gas cap and the engine block is orange with a 4-barrel. He says the guy told him he thinks its a 318 wich it probably is but I hopeing for a 340. Guy says it runs but has a hole in the tank. Anyways hes going to set up a time I can go look at it and I will get some pics of it then or shortly after when its at hy house. Ill keep you updated!

If the engine block is orange with a 4 barrel, it should be a big block.

it could also be a 340-ask if the distributor is in front-if it is then it is a big block

The engine (original) can be figured out by the 5th letter/digit in the vin number if you don't know that. Engine codes for 1970 follow...I think I got all the codes...let me know if I missed any! :2thumbs:

C- 225 (Slant 6)
G- 318-2bbl
H- 340-4bbl
J- 340-6 pack
L- 383-2bbl
N- 383-4bbl
R- 426 Hemi
U- 440-4bbl HP
V- 440-6 pack

He showed me the pics. Its a smallblock. It did have the old aluminum finned valve covers so someone may have played with a 318 and put a four barrel on it. But like I said I hope its a 340 car. Ive been into mopars for about 15 years now and have owned several A and B bodies and have had a 74 challenger for a couple of years now so I have a pretty good idea what Im looking at. And yes I know I need pics but I need to set up a time to see the car and take them. I might see if I can get him to e-mail the pics off his camera so I can post them. Also dont know if I will have room for both so I may have to put one up for sale. If so it will be on this site i'm sure.
