Neutral/park/safety switch question

I have a question on the neutral safety switch on the Torqueflite 727 big block automatic transmission. I have been trying to correct all the butchered wiring in my '74 Dodge Challenger. The neutral safety switch had originally been jumpered out. I have installed new wiring harnesses from Evans wiring. The new transmission harness has a 3-pin connector that should plug into the tranny (torqueflite 727, big block). The switch that is screwed into my tranny is an older type switch with a single lug connector on it (the tranny is a replacement). It obviously won't plug into my 3-pin connector. What do I do?? If I bought a newer type 3-pin type switch would it be compatible with my tranny?? Would it even screw in?? :dunno: Or should I cut the plug off of my brand new harness and connect it to the old style lug connector? :clueless: If so, which wires from the connector would go to the single lug on the switch?? I don't know what to do here and need some help! :dunno: You guys rock and have gotten me out of a hole more than once. Thanks in advance!! :bigsmile:

Hey Terry,

I was under the car messing around with my kickdown linkage.  During the process the NSS plug fell off.  I have been having problems with intermittent starting since I have owned the car and have always thought the NSS was the culprit. 

So I stick it back on without taking a good look at it and take it for a drive.  It fell off again and there I was lying under the car sticking it back on at a filling station.  Without a doubt I need a new NSS!  However I was wondering how these stay on.  Is it friction?  Screwed?  Tabs?

Just friction. The electrical connections grip the pins. Suppose the rubber grips a little bit on the switch body.

Thanks thats what I thought. I didn't see any other mechanical means of securing it.   It's pretty loose and the pins are corroded all to heck.  I'll pick up another one,

You can take alittle silicone and put a dab on the rubber part before you plug it in,then let it cure. Should "glue" it to it.

The rubber connectors tend to get hard and don't seat properly on the NNS.  A new harness should stay connected.  I think they are around $30 through Year One.

I know the factory changed the valve body design where the NSS makes contact.  I didn't think you could just swap NSS styles without changing the contact on the valve body.  I don't remember the exact details but remember reading about it.

Yes,you can swap NS switches (short style/long style). It is a good idea to have the pan off and verify the internal contact on any swap though.

Cleaned the contacts and put 'er back on with a dab of silicone.  It should be good to go. Thanks guys.
