Zapped!
« on: June 30, 2009 - 03:59:57 PM »
Well, last night we came home from a doctors appointment and going out to eat, and when we got there, all of our televisions, DVD players, VCR, and computer were fried. It looks like a surge was pushed through the cable and fried my ****. so now i have no TV, Internet or anything. I am hoping that the cable company covers this crap but probably not. They pretty much suck. and im not sure if the insurance company will cover it either. Ours was the only house effected too. What a crummy crummy thing to come home to. anyway, just had to vent a bit and let you all know that i will only be on when i am at work till the internet gets fixed.

Drew,

Maybe it was some kind of power surge.   :dunno:  Do you have surge protectors on your electronic items?

I know what killed my dads big screen was not a surge but a continuous current of low voltage. He had to eat it as there is low voltage protection available. Now he has a surge protector and a low voltage protection for all his electronics. Sorry that happened to you, I lost a computer to a surge and it sucks.

I had to go through my insurance when my big screen got crashed, they determined the value of my TV and would fix repair costs up to that amount or allow me to put it towards a new one

You had a lot of thunderstorms lately so would you suspect that could be the cause?
A few years ago our neighbor had a direct hit to his house, actually blew a hole in the gable, and we got a secondary hit that took out the TV, stereo and portable phones so I added a surge protector that the cable also goes through...Cable man tells me years later they don't see problems in that area and that most likely the surge was on the power side.

It is always a good idea to have a Surge Arrestor on both the Line and Low voltage.

Tom

Hope the insurance pays, my neighbor had a claim a couple years ago when his electronics got taken out.

I have surge protectors on everything but this looks like it came through the cable, like cable tv and internet. The clocks on the same surge protectors were still working fine. I was the only one affected by it and it was in 4 different rooms. And it only affected the items hooked to the cable or hooked to thethings that were hooked to the cable

That sucks.  Sometimes even with protection, a lightening strike will blow through it and fry everything.  Hope you get your things covered by insurance.

Hope they cover it. If not homeowners insurance should. My dad lives out in the sticks so he opted out of insurance long ago. I still hassle him about it to this day. Crazy not to have it.

well, they said there was no char marks on the cable stuff so there is nothing pointing to the cable causing it (other than the only items fried were connected to the cable.) so now it is time to go through renters insurance and see where we get.

I have surge protectors on everything and more importantly I check them regularly to see if they still work.  They do go bad.  I also had a surge protector installed at the point of entry into the house when we moved it.  The electric company was out anyway doing an inspection of the house and simply added it to the bill for about 50 bucks.

Have you asked your neighbors if they had any problems?  It seems very odd that you would be the only one affected.  Did the cable guy check the main box at the street where it branches off to your place?  This is definitely a bummer.

:iagree:  sure is a bummer for sure.  Could be the cable company trying to wiggle out of something here also
