My stupid AC is going out
« on: July 02, 2009 - 08:36:45 PM »
And I don't have a warranty anymore. But, I'm getting one as soon as I get paid! Doesn't help that it was 101 today. Someone is coming out tomorrow to look at it, but its still 85 in here right now!

Check of the condenser fan outside is running....if not set up a spray of water to cool the condenser coils.

By going out do you mean it's running (compressor and attic unit) but not cooling?  If so, it is probably a freon related issue, either low or a leak.  We just replaced our downstairs unit last month.  The upside is if your current unit is more than 8 years old, then anything you get new today will be at least 30% more efficient, and will run on the new refrigerant.

I know my a/c freaked out last week the day before we left for our vacation. For some reason the cooling fan cycled off and did not cycle back on. Once I pulled the disconnect and let the motor controls reset it worked just fine. Hope its something simple and not an expensive fix.

It's in my house. First the capacitor went out. The guy I was talking about had a used one that he gave me. I put it on myself. The next few days though it wasn't cooling like it was supposed to. Then the condenser fan went out. Right now we got a window unit we borrowed, but its' still 85 in here. I'm not sure how hot it got here in Fort Worth today but I'm sure it was at least 100. Anyway, the same guy is getting a new fan and new capacitor tomorrow morning and he's gonna sell those to me for his cost and only charge me $30/hr labor. Pretty damn nice guy if you ask me.

Glad you found the problem and that it sounds like the guy is giving you a break. I know in Arlington it was over 100 yesterday. Hot as hell and without an air conditioner its just miserable. Good luck on the fix.

I had a similar situation and got really lucky - after talking with the a/c guy, I found out he was a Mopar Nut too! My a/c needed a new blower motor due to a bad (non servicable) bearing.  The best part - it only cost me a 440 crank that I've had laying around for YEARS! I was probably never going to use it anyways  :cooldancing:

Nice Gary! This guy really hooked me up. He sold me the parts at HIS cost and only charged me $30/hr. So, it was $150 total, and I got a bigger motor in there now too. I gave him an extra $20. Thank God there are still awesome people out there.

Labor is only $30/hour? Wow... here (Northridge, California) labor is around $80/hour!
