Help - Horn does not work
« on: July 03, 2009 - 07:54:36 PM »
Hey guys,

I have moved on to my next electrical gremlin......the horn! It does not work!!!   I have look at the wiring from the horns back to the firewall and on the inside as well....everything seems to be ok.  I have also checked the horns to ensure they work by touching them with a hot wire from the battery and they both work.  I believe part of my problem is that I am missing the horn relay.  I am just not sure what it looks like and from the reading I have done on the forum it sounds as if it plugs into the top of the fuse panel below the dash.  If this is correct.....then I am missing the horn relay.  I have looked on the forum and performed some searches regarding this subject however each time I get a lead the link or picture is broke or missing.  Does anyone have a picture of what it looks like and where it goes?  Also, where can I get one?

Thanks

Ted

I was in your shoes once. Someone removed my relay. I guess the original might have been bad, but if you go thru the trouble to remove it, why not replace it?   :pullinghair:

Yes, it is on your fuse block, but they varied thru the years. It is a rectangular silver thingie.

The relay also functions as the key-in buzzer, that's probably why it was removed.
It should be easy enough to wire in a common 3-prong relay to serve the purpose

 :iagree:

I've had plenty of cars with missing relays and jerry-rigged horn switches. Plug in a new relay and viola!

I guess those buzzers must have REALLY been annoying back then!

You can fold-over or cut off one of the tabs and the horn will still work, but no buzzer. I don't recall which tab, sorry.  :eek4:

I think it's the lonesome one, mine is broken off and I always wondered why.  seems like the correct relay is tougher to find locally.

Unfortunately they do not list a horn relay for our models with the fourth terminal, although I suspect the 3-prong relay for the '74 model would work for horn only.

Not to Hijack this too much -- but what about the opposite?    I was driving down the road and all of sudden my horn goes off and it won't quit!     I pulled the horn ring and disconnected the wire inside the steering wheel -- no change.    Ultimately I had to pop the hood and disconnect the horns.     Might it be this relay sticking or something?    This was with my '74 -- no other previous wiring issues and I hadn't touched it!    Any ideas?
