'72 Challenger Rallye Driver/Restore
« on: July 05, 2009 - 02:07:36 PM »
As I said in my newbie post I just picked up my first E-Body, '72 Challenger Rallye 340, up in Atlanta.  I hope to drive and restore at the same time.  When I brought the car I soon found out that the only thing that was touched on the front of this car in 37 years was the brakes.  It had all original bushings, ball joints (which I don't think were ever lubed), shocks (I could flex them like an accordian), and gear box (which was leaking and had been for some time).  The motor was rebuilt in March, original carb and headers though which aren't looking great.  It did run and drive when I brought it, until I tore out the whole front suspension and steering.  Once I get this all replaced I can start driving her as I work on her.  She's by NO means anywhere close to show ready but still a running classic E-body, you don't get that too often.  I will have to post pics as I go along.  Again I know there are really sharp experts on this site any ideas, suggestions, things I could miss, some gotchas you all have run into would be much appreciated.

Using poly or oe style rubber bushings???.. If poly cut your rear strut bushing down to not loose +camber as the poly does not compress like the rubber...

Get a photobucket or like free account to upload your pictures to then just link to here or wherever...much better than direct uploads here.

I am in Navarre, FL which is about 30 min east of Pensacola in NW FL (panhandle).  I'm working on pics, I have been using my work computer becuase I have a virus on my personal computer where all my pics are.  I'm trying to remedy ASAP.

I just realized that you are from my neck of the woods. if you need a hand, there are quite a few folks from here that i am sure would jump in a car and head up to help. (and show a pilot a couple things LOL.  :smilielol: )

Seriously though, you need help, holler. this place becomes another family and we help a lot.

That's awesome to learn and for anyone who would be interested I ALWAYS have cold beer stocked and I can work one hell of a mean grill!!!  I'm sure I will need saving...more than once.  That's why cars are tough they don't come in pilot speak!

Sounds like a plan to me...joining this site is already working out.  What kind of info are you looking for on the car?  It's all original number's matching Rallye, the folks that owned it before didn't do a whole lot.  Motor was rebuilt in March '09, new components for that, aluminum radiator (original was shot), floor pans, carpet and headliner are pretty new, vinyl top is about 2+ years old, the trunk pan is pretty solid, been patched (poorly) but not to horrible, back seat is practically band new, front seats vinyl is tore up, dash pad has several cracks but completely intact with the rallye gauges, has the original stereo in it (sweet), body is pretty solid some rust and bondo but not nearly as bad as I was thinking it was gonna be, i don't think there are any pieces that aren't salvagable, I haven't dug into the body yet so stanby on that.  Like I said the guys before me just did maintenance items no upgrades....that's for me to do now.

do you know what tranny it has, rear end, gearing? I imagine that it is the 904 and an 8 3/4 but interested in the gear ratio. definately looks like a great car from the pics. make sure to take lots and lots of pictures of her with any work that you do. there is lots of information on here for anything that you want to do. I have done just about everything to my car, minus body work, so if you need help holler. i have a buddy here (vette guy  :puke: ) that is great with body work. anyway, you can hit me up looking in the global too. The rearend is a 3:55 sure grip and the tranny is, I believe, a 904.  The guy I got it from wasn't sure and I haven't gotten that far.  My buddy has a era matching Mopar 4-speed he's gonna sell me, when I get there, so the tranny was not a big concerned it just needed to work.
