frame issues
« on: July 09, 2009 - 09:13:40 PM »
Need some opinions guys. Bought a 72 cuda that had homemade (professional but not oem) frame rails installed. My bodyshop buddy came over and gave me a bunch of crap for buying the car cuz it needs so much work.  Work doesn't bother me but now I wonder if the work was done properly or not.Frame alignment issues and all has me kind of scared. The work was obviously done to make a drag car so no concern for floor fit or trunkpan fit was addressed. Should I just replace the rails with correct parts and any ideas about alignment. Thanks in advance for your help.  And yes I know "worthless without pictures".
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I'd have the frame checked for straightness. The front and rear suspension hang from the frame rails.  If the car is not straight the car will never track correctly.

The other thing to consider is that these cars are not body on frame construction, they are unitized construction which means the floor pans, trunk pan, the cowl/firewall, the roof, pillars, windshield frame and the frame rails all add to the structural integrity of the car.  Since your frame rails are not OEM you should ensure that they are welded in a similar manner to OEM and are at least the same metal gauge thickness and cover the same area as OEM.
