It's time to restart my thread.  :bananasmi It's been quite a while since I posted any progress, and almost 1 year without any major work due to a wicked back injury.  :violin:

The project is entitled "desert resurrection" this 1973 challenger was purchase new in Arizona, and lived a hard life, only to be left for dead in the desert. I bought this and another for a steal. I had them shipped to Michigan where I began the evaluation. I would soon determine that the car that looked the worst was the better car to build. Much to the chagrin of my wife, the project was started shortly after we had our second child.

As many of you know, life is tough. I have 2 young kids, a wife who works and goes to school, and a job at Chrysler that is very demanding. If I am not helping out with family stuff, or working, I am spending time in the garage, in the basement, working, restoring or researching on the Internet about the challenger.  :working:

I do design sidework to help fund my project. I do some hot rod sketching, display stands, furniture, toy design, product design, whatever pays for car parts.  :ebay:

My skills are in fabrication, I love working sheetmetal, i dig shaping metal. Many years ago, I painted cars for a living. I got away from it for a while- it tends to shorten a lifespan..  :drunk: :banghead: :pullinghair:
Years go by, and i decide to build another car, this time, the metal fab clicks like never before. So, now I enjoy the challenge of making panels return to their original shape. - the metal speaks to me.  :screwy:

I am methodical, and I love detail! In this thread you will see some comprehensive detail - body, paint, and assembly.
Enjoy!

When it arrived home witht he other car, I had to keep it from the neighborhood "visual ethical commitee"
I made that up, but the point is, I didn't want to piss people off.

Here is a shot of the engine...Yeah, if you look real hard.....( it's imaginary )
http://www.pbase.com/dmz73/image/65717756

So eventually, I pulled the axle out of the "good" car and put it in the car I was to build.

Then I began to fix the fender.. (step by step)

26 hours of work later....

Then I proceeded to peel of the roof... It was toast... :scared:

Look ma, no roof!! :eek2:

Here's what was left:
http://www.pbase.com/dmz73/image/72546236

Then I carefully peeled this one off of a donor roof:
http://www.pbase.com/dmz73/image/72546223

Then, for grins and giggles, I tossed it on the car, just to see some progress...
http://www.pbase.com/dmz73/image/72322710

It still had a ton of dents and ding sin it, but I wasn't worried....

Pulled the quarter panel. Man that was a tough one. This car was so crunched in the the corner, that I spent 3 hours bangin on it to try to get it so that I could drill out the welds. It was a fight. :banghead:

http://www.pbase.com/dmz73/image/72322711
The tailpanel corner was so mangled, even I could not save it. (I don't have a pic of the tangled mess)

SO I went out to california, and met Mr. Daryl Finch, visited the great E-body salvage yard in the high California Desert...and lo and behold, there is the part that I need. :money:

A little cuttin' a little bangin, and clamp it in place....
http://www.pbase.com/dmz73/image/72546240
You can see the amount of distortion in the tailpanel. It looks like it took a little more than a love tap. So I creatively jacked the panel into position, and tacked the patch in place.

Not bad for a kid.... :cooldancing:

Then threw some paint on the roof:

Next up, the trunk..
http://www.pbase.com/dmz73/image/72952339
 :eek4:
lotsa cutting with the dremel wheel. I cut along the tangent off the frame rail, and removed the end flange, the lock/tailpanel support.....

in da trunk...

Before the support goes back in...

Now the new dutchman...
http://www.pbase.com/dmz73/image/88924803
http://www.pbase.com/dmz73/image/88924805

This is my only complaint about the dutchman and "new" quarter panle fitment.
http://www.pbase.com/dmz73/image/89022093

NOw, the only floorpan patch...Lotsa trimmin, sneaking up on it.
The only boo-boo.... I tacked around the outside, then decided to weld it before welding to the frame rail.
Big whoops. I'll never do that again. It warped like heck, and had to be cut and patched. Not fun.

So here is where I left off last year:

When I got the car, it had no engine.
As I spend so much time so much time on  :ebay: and Craigslist, hunting things down, I see all the deals and major scores that everyone seems to get but me....
Then one day, my luck changed...
 :ylsuper: :angelwings:
I called on an ad about a 360 engine, and the guy wanted 750, I went and it was still in his truck.
He started it up, and it ran nicely, despite sitting for a while. This guy was a great  person. Not only did he sell me the engine from top to bottom, front to back for 750, but he also pulled it himself, and delivered it to my house!
Here he is drinkin one of my finest brews.

Here's the dirty beast:

http://www.pbase.com/dmz73/image/110736482
Some extra parts
http://www.pbase.com/dmz73/image/110736468

Then I needed to get the yuck out, and make it purdy...

Hang tight my friend. A few more posts. I had to prep the kids dinner, clean up, do some time-outs, have a conversation with the wife...Y'know, the family stuff...

Here we go. THis catalogues the stripping and removal of funk in the engine bay/firewall.
NOt fun, but done properly, it ads to the finished product.

Lemme start with this:

Now I will go back in the next couple of days, and add in all the detail that I skipped over, to make it as complete
as possible. Tomorrow, I am  getting my rebuilt booster and master cylinder, putting on my oil pan, and getting the car staged for the motor on Tuesday.
I plan on decking the car onto the motor, as they did in the factory.
I have much work to do, and will try to keep this  updated until Thursday, when I am heading out of town.
I still need a bunch of parts.
Alternator, Coil, some gas and brake lines, fuel pump, wiper motor, rebuilt brake calipers....
Its the little things that count right? :grinno:
 :working: :working: :working: :working: :working:

By the way, I'll post my latest conundrum tomorrow. My pulleys are not right. They are quite mismatched.
I will post tomorrow.
There ya have it John, I'm done for now!
