Hillclimb time
« on: July 16, 2009 - 02:27:27 PM »
It's that time of year again.

87th annual Pikes Peak Auto Hillclimb practice has started this week. The second oldest race in the country, the starting line elevation is 9390 feet above sea level. The course runs 12.42 miles with 156 turns before reaching the fnish line at the summit, 14,110 ft.

Jess Neal and his '71 AAR clone will be running in the vintage division again this year. A new addition to the traditional line up of divisions is the new time attack class. This is basically a street car catagory that so long as you have a roll cage and other safety equipment, means you can run you car up the Peak. A friend of mine is prepping his Demon for a potential assualt next year. Maybe in a few more years my Challenger will be ready.

If its got wheels, it has probalby run up the Peak. This year will have of course the stock cars, open wheel, pro truck, and unlimited rallye cars, but also quads, Legends, sidecars and semis.

If you think you have big brass ones, come on out and give this a shot. Check out the links above to see what its all about.

Looks like our own Jess Neal placed third in his division with a time of 14:43. Only .87 seconds of the 1st place position. Not bad for a loose track with some unpredictable weather.

Some other vintage cars running this year; '63 Falcon, '54 Old, '55 Vette, '52 Desoto Firedome, '65-66 Mustangs, '66 Shelby Cobra.

I'll see if I can find any photos to post up.

Thanks for the pics.  Those are awesome.
That race must be the best.
Any close calls this year?   Cliffs or walls??

This Year's version just completed this past weekend.

Jess Neal finished second in the RMVR vintage class with his '71 Cuda. He cut 30 seconds off his time from 2010, but is still chasing that Falcon. They posted a nice daybreak practice shot of his car as the second slide on the home page: http://www.usacracing.com/ppihc

A new record was set by "Monster" Tajima in his unlimited 4wd 900 hp turbocharged Suzuki, finally eclisping the 10 minute barrier with a 9:51;http://sports.yahoo.com/nascar/news?slug=ap-pikespeakhillclimb

One of the rallye drivers spun off the edge and did a few airbornes spins. Driver emerged unscathed; http://uk.autoblog.com/2011/06/28/video-rally-car-drives-over-the-edge-on-pikes-peak/

This was the last year of combined dirt and asphalt surfaces on the mountain. The city plans to complete paving operations on the road before next year's Race to The Clouds. This will entirely change the makeup of the race as compromised settings of combined dirt/asphalt will no longer be required and the enhanced traction of 12 miles of tarmac will create new records in most classes.

That is Awesome Jesse!!  2nd place is great.  Keep chasin that falcon.
Next year it will be like a totally different race.
Been up that mountain 2 or 3 dozen times.  That pavement will make that mountain drive totally different.

What do you think about them paving the whole thing??

Any stories you would like to share about your part of the race??

Very cool thanks for the pics. I didn't get up there to watch, went to the NSRA show down in Pueblo instead. Bet it was a lot cooler on the mountain.  Matt

Some links I found on you tube;

This is pretty amazing because even with this mishap, Jess improved his time over last year.

Another one, but of a Camaro, that demonstrates why one should stand far off the racing surface

Yeah, I've noticed that. IMO, it is unfortuante that poker is considered a bigger prime time sport these days.
